San Francisco Herb and Natural Food Company Recall

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 29th July 2012

Good evening!

How often do I say that? Almost never. But what can I say? CW: To answer your question: I’ve been bad…very bad. And sometimes when it is that good, I can’t help but be bad.

Nonetheless…better late than never.

CBS reports that a massive infestation of rats closes a Fremont food company. This may have happened in my town but the ripple is all across the nation. I thought you would want to know so I am posting it here.

Photos Inside Dirty Fremont Plant

Fremont company recalls 16 products due to contamination of filth following NBC Bay Area investigation.

San Francisco Herb and Natural Food Company issued a voluntary recall of 16 products one day after an NBC Bay Area Investigation uncovered a “massive rodent infestation” at the company’s Fremont plant.

The company said there are no reported illnesses connected to any of their products.

The items listed in the recall were mostly sold on the internet across the United States, according to the company.

“San Francisco Herb is working with the California Department of Public Health and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to take corrective measures and address any health concerns.”

Click here to see list of recalled products

If you have an item on the list you are supposed to destroy it. If you want a refund remove the white sticker found on the back of the package and contact Dr. Fahimeh Niroomand of San Francisco Herb & Natural Foods Company at 510-770-1215, ex. 115.

The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit has been working on this story for two months.

After the California health department learned of our investigation it issued an embargo of more than a million pounds of product at the Fremont plant, essentially shutting it down.

Here is our initial report that sparked this recall:

The California Department of Public Health has told NBC Bay Area News that a “massive rodent infestation” has lead the state agency to shut down a major East Bay food distributor and request that the company launch a nationwide recall. The actions came after the state learned about a two-month NBC Bay Area investigation.

The state agency placed an embargo on Fremont-based San Francisco Herb and Natural Food Company earlier this month and now has requested that the natural food, tea and herb distributor recall products it has recently sold in California and throughout the country. The embargo prevented the company from selling and distributing more than a million pounds of product in California and to its online customers throughout the world.

“We found a massive rodent infestation throughout the facility including direct product infestation,” Patrick Kennelly, Chief of the Food Safety Section of the California Department of Public Health told NBC Bay Area Chief Investigator Tony Kovaleski. Kennelly said state inspectors also found evidence of  “dead rodent bodies, live bodies, fecal and urine contamination on products.”

According to the company’s website, San Francisco Herb and Natural Food Company has been in business for 40 years. Its warehouse facility is located in Fremont off of Highway 880, just north of the former Solyndra Plant.

Kennelly said the decision to shut down the facility and request a nationwide recall came after state health inspectors discovered a massive rodent infestation in late June, adding that his inspectors found “evidence that products in the facility had been adulterated by filth including rodent excrete and rodent urine.”

He added that state inspectors also discovered rodents burrowing into products.

“It is still a very active infestation in the facility,” Kennelly said.

According to the state, the owners of San Francisco Herb and Natural Food Company are cooperating with investigators and are expected to announce the company’s voluntary national recall in the next two days.

When asked if the actions were unusual Kennelly responded, “It is very unusual. This is a 150,000 square foot warehouse that has two stories and for us to embargo all the products in that facility because of the massive level of contamination throughout the facility, occurs very rarely.”

NBC Bay Area’s ongoing investigation began in May and in recent weeks Kovaleski contacted the owners of San Francisco Herb and Natural Food Company. The owners offered no comment and declined to review any of the information uncovered by the investigation. The owners hired an attorney who contacted the Investigative Unit at NBC Bay Area and said the company would have no comment.

Readers: This is simply sickening. Although I am delighted that somebody finally spoke up, the question I ask is, “Why did you take so long?” One can only imagine just how long these horrific conditions were present and no one did anything until now.

I know, I know…It’s a short day on “A day in the life of…”…but blog me anyway. :)

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. NRA: Enabler Of Death

Good morning!

There has been a lot of talk about the “crazy” man that swept his way through the theater in Colorado killing many and injuring more. And of course my readers are very verbal as well.

I just have to speak my two here too, because the logic of the law escapes me. How is saying that you can buy any gun you want, but you cannot be allowed to buy an assault rifle, interfere with your 2nd Amendment rights? I think it is perfectly fine to want to own a gun.

I will quote Barbara because I like what she said: “Most of the rest of us support the right to bear arms, but reasonable arms, NOT weapons that are bought just for the purpose of killing a lot of people, or to support a small penis neurosis.” So yes, you might just want to buy a simple handgun to protect your family, with no thought whatsoever to buy an assault gun.  Okay, that’s reasonable. But why would you ever support the purchasing of a gun that is anything more? You may own a gun and not want to do what the killer in Colorado did, but there are people who want to and do, and we are supporting that by allowing these assault weapons to be sold.

I don’t know what goes through your mind but my mind says that you have to have the smallest dick in the world to want an assault rifle. And in my opinion, the smaller the dick the bigger the gun they want. (And yes, maybe even a huge truck to go along with, following that same path) They have to make up for it in some way, and that seems to be the chosen way for many who decide to buy such a weapon. Yeah that makes you a big man doesn’t it?  And don’t get me going about the women that go for this kind of man. I won’t go down that path. You know what I’m talking about. The logic just escapes me.

Let me take a side leap for a bit and then I’ll be back.

I think there should be a new title for the republican party: “The Paid To Play Party” – Simple, they are paid to play: The PTP PartyThe Politician’s hand is out saying, “Pay me and I’ll play like I am your politician.” Whatever they need to say, so that the people who pay them will be satisfied and all the stupid people will listen and go along, hoping to somehow get big enough…rich enough so they can pay politicians to play their game too. The promise is there, but as we know, they won’t ever make it.

So if the rich people want to have more money they pay for the politician to play the game that suits their needs, their interests…you know the things that brings them the big bucks.  Who cares what morals you speak…what you believe in. You are paid to play…to think and vote with the highest bidder who bought you. Just make sure that you can convince the stupid people to go along with you. And as you can see, many of our politicians do.

Now back to the movie massacre in Colorado.

You can call the guy “crazy”…you can say “he was motivated by the movie – let’s outlaw the movie”…”he would’ve found another way even if he didn’t buy the assault guns”. Or whatever else you want to say. Well, let him find another way, but don’t make it easy. We’re making it easy by not making these types of guns, these assault weapons illegal to buy.

Then to add to it, we find out that this killer is making bombs in his home. Okay then, we make it illegal to buy these kinds of things that make it easy to make these bombs.  It can’t goon how it is; we have to start eliminating something.

I mean really, why in the world do we have allow these types of guns and bomb making ingredients legal to purchase in the first place? Do we really need to have these available? Who needs a rifle with 6000 rounds of ammunition? Simple. No one except a killer. And he doesn’t even need an ID to buy it.

Look, the bottom line is, it doesn’t matter if the guy was crazy, upset, or whatever. And we certainly don’t need a shrink to tell us why the guy did it. Who cares what reason he had to do it,  or how crazy he is. He did it because we allowed him to buy assault weapons so that he could carry through with his plan. Take away that ability and you take away the opportunity.

If he couldn’t buy the guns in the first place he wouldn’t be able to do what he did. Why is that so hard to understand? No other arguement matters. If it was against the law for this killer to buy these kind of assault weapons, he wouldn’t  be able to shoot anybody because he wouldn’t have been able to buy them. Now as it stands, he can buy it on the internet, without a background check, and without an ID.

The lack of an ID to purchase a gun makes me think. We’re coming up on what I feel is going to be the most important election to date. So…think about this fact: It is easier to buy an assault rifle than it is to vote. How inane is that? You have to have more identification just to exercise your right to vote. But no ID to go out and buy an assault weapon.(!)

Thank you NRA. Is the NRA a group that is for the people, or are they for the group that are making and selling the guns? It’s obvious who they support. And yes, it is obvious that the PTP Party are bought by the NRA, because really, the solution to resolve this issue is simple. The PTP Party knows the solution, but they don’t want that solution, because that solution is against what they want to do politically, against what they are getting paid to play,  to advance, what they are paid to do politically.

So they lie about the solution. The solution is simple: Make it illegal to sell these types of weapons. But no, their thought is “Let’s ignore the real solution and let’s pretend there is something else we can do”. The PTP Party are LSOS’s.

I’m done. I like what Moyers has to say:

Bill Moyers: NRA ‘Enabler Of Death’ (VIDEO)

PBS’ Bill Moyers had blistering words for the National Rifle Association in the wake of the deadly shootings in Colorado.

Moyers placed partial blame for the murders in the NRA’s lap in a web video posted over the weekend, calling it “the best friend a killer’s instinct ever had.”

He said that the lobbying of the NRA had made it easier for people like James Holmes, the alleged killer in the Colorado shootings, to obtain their weapons.

“Every year there are 30,000 gun deaths and 300,000 gun-related assaults in the U.S.,” he said. “Firearm violence may cost our country as much as $100 billion a year. Toys are regulated with greater care and safety concerns than guns … we have become so gun loving, so blasé about home-grown violence that in my lifetime alone, far more Americans have been casualties of domestic gunfire than have died in all our wars combined.”

He finished by calling the NRA “the enabler of death — paranoid, delusional, and as venomous as a scorpion.”

Though they did not express themselves with quite his vehemence, Moyers is one of several to call for stricter gun control laws in the days after the shootings.

What’s In Your Clothing?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 23rd July 2012

Good morning!

After reading the comments yesterday I discovered that there are quite a few topics being discussed that have been on my mind as well. But since I only post once a day, I decided to pick a topic that is close to home and reserve my thoughts on the other topics for another day.

I am in the fashion business and shopping for others is a task that I do very often. I myself try not to buy anything made in China, and especially clothing. It is a tough thing to do when practically everything , even higher end items are made in China. With respect to shopping for my clients it is impossible when I am buying many things for them to not pull items made in China. And since it is not a requirement from my clients, where it is made is low on the list when it comes to me shopping for them.

However, after reading the comments from E and Robert, rt, and Haley, (thank you all!) I figured there are many more concerned readers who would like to know just what is in the garments that are draping their precious bodies. I know I want to know.

The first article I discovered was the one that E mentioned: A report published by Greenpeace. Today I am going to post the one on Formaldehyde which is present and prevalent in our clothing.

Toxic dyes, lethal logos, cotton drenched in formaldehyde… How your clothes could poison you

As she opened the packet of new T-shirts she had bought from a well-known High Street chain, Merlene Paul hoped that, just for once, she would be able to indulge her former love of clothes.

But within seconds she was overwhelmed by familiar sensations. ‘My throat closed up, my eyes started to sting and a sharp, acrid smell made my nose prickle,’ says the retired 63-year-old. ‘I knew I had to get away from the T-shirts quickly, or I’d have a full-blown reaction.’

The culprit? Formaldehyde. It is most commonly associated with preserving corpses, but, alarmingly, many big clothing chains also use it to give their wares a fresh, unwrinkled appearance and prevent mildew during shipping.

Forced to quit two jobs: Samantha Devlin suffers from ‘POTS’ (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) which makes her allergic to toxic chemicals

Not that you’d necessarily know. The manufacturers of clothes sold in the UK are not required to disclose the use of the chemical on labels. And despite tests in New Zealand that discovered formaldehyde levels in some Chinese clothes exports up to 900 times higher than the prescribed safety limit, no testing has been done on similar clothes sold in Britain.

Yet formaldehyde, a highly toxic, colourless gas, has been linked to skin irritation and allergic reactions. Even more worryingly, the chemical is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And according to Merlene, from Hungerford, Berkshire, it’s ubiquitous: ‘It’s in mattresses, bedding, carpeting, furniture and in most of the clothes that we buy. Department stores smell pungently of it. And washing clothes before you wear them isn’t always enough to get rid of it.’

She first experienced a problem 20 years ago when she was working in the interior design industry, spending hours each day in a workshop where rolls of fabric were being stored.

After three months she started to feel extremely ill. ‘I started off with flu-like symptoms and then I developed bloodshot eyes and my nose started to bleed. I visited the doctor repeatedly but they couldn’t explain it. Then I developed welts on my body.’

Shortly after that, Merlene collapsed at work and was diagnosed with a suspected allergy to a number of chemicals, including formaldehyde. She was unable to move for two weeks and had a painfully slow battle to walk again.

‘I had to give up my career, as furniture and fabric are often infused with formaldehyde,’ she says. ‘I struggled to find jobs that wouldn’t expose me to it. I worked as a receptionist for a dentist for a while, but they used formaldehyde and so I had to quit.

‘People don’t realise how this chemical pervades their lives. And while small amounts in one product might not cause them to react, they should consider what the cumulative effect is when everything, including the clothes on their backs, is pervaded with it.’

But formaldehyde isn’t the only concern. In August last year, Greenpeace published a report, Dirty Laundry 2, revealing it had detected traces of toxic chemicals — specifically nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) — in products made by 14 big-brand clothing manufacturers, including Adidas and H&M.

Samantha, pictured with some of the medicine she uses to treat her allergies, said: ¿I now have most of my clothes donated from friends and family. That way, I know they have been washed multiple times'Samantha, pictured with some of the medicine she uses to treat her allergies, said: ¿I now have most of my clothes donated from friends and family. That way, I know they have been washed multiple times’

NPEs have been commonly used as detergents in the textile industry. Their use is restricted throughout Europe, but since most big brands are produced abroad where no such regulations exist, our clothes can still carry them.

Some experts believe that, even at low levels, these toxins represent a threat to the environment and human health. Again, there is a suggestion they could be linked to certain cancers.

‘It’s when this chemical comes into contact with water that it degrades and become hazardous, says Dominic Thompson from Greenpeace. ‘It’s bio-accumulative which means that it builds up in your body. We don’t fully know what the consequences of that will be.’

Dr Brian Clement, who co-authored the book Killer Clothes, agrees: ‘Over the past 60 years there has been a significant increase in health problems that may be associated with wearing synthetics.’

He says synthetic clothes contain toxins including brominated flame retardants and perfluorinated chemicals which are classified as cancer-causing by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Trichloroethylene, another chemical commonly used by manufacturers, is also classified as a carcinogen.

WHO KNEW?

One in three of the UK population suffers from allergies at some point in their life

These toxins have been linked to dermatitis, allergic reactions and can even contribute to infertility, he says.

Another chemical that can cause problems is p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), used in black clothing and to dye leather.

Samantha Devlin, 33, is so allergic to it that she has been forced to quit two jobs. Her problems began when she got a job in a hairdressing salon as a teenager. ‘I was mixing dye all the time and I began to get dermatitis — constantly itchy skin, sometimes with weeping sores. I’d never had any allergies as a child.

‘I had hospital tests and they told me I was allergic to PPD. I stopped working with dye at the salon but the problem didn’t improve. In fact, when I was 19, I ended up in hospital with my fingers swollen like a bunch of bananas.

‘It was then a nurse told me that I should change career. She said that if any PPD got into my bloodstream I could suffer anaphylactic shock and that if I stayed in hairdressing I could be dead by the age of 21.’

Merlene Paul said: 'People don¿t realise how this chemical pervades their lives. And while small amounts in one product might not cause them to react, they should consider what the cumulative effect is'Merlene Paul said: ‘People don’t realise how this chemical pervades their lives. And while small amounts in one product might not cause them to react, they should consider what the cumulative effect is’

But her next job, as a croupier, was no better, thanks to the black uniform she had to wear — black dye contains more PPD than any other colour — so she had to leave.

‘It’s been really difficult,’ says Samantha, from Luton, Beds. ‘I now have most of my clothes donated from friends and family. That way, I know they have been washed multiple times and probably won’t cause me problems. I’d love to be able to wear some sexy shoes and a little black dress without thinking about it, but I can’t.’

Yvonne Simon, a 35-year-old fashion choreographer from Southend-on-Sea, suffers similarly. ‘I bought a leather jacket when I was 18. It made my face swell up and turn grey. Around the same time, I bought a cheap denim jacket that gave me a rash on my neck that lasted for weeks.

‘It was then I discovered I’m very sensitive to the dyes in clothes. Later, when I was 26, I was diagnosed with reactive hyperplasia, a condition of the lymph glands which means I swell up when I encounter something I’m allergic to.

‘So I have to be very careful about what I wear. I can’t touch dark clothes in shops without wearing gloves. I stick to light-coloured clothes in natural fabrics like cotton.’

In fact, there’s a whole list of horrors in our clothes.

Elizabeth Salter Green, director of the campaigning body CHEM Trust, warns against phthalates, which are used to make plastic more flexible and resilient.

She says: ‘Phthalates, which are linked with hormone disruption — such as reducing male sperm count — are found in many clothes with plastic logos on. Also, many new shoes and clothes have a strong, plasticky smell which can indicate they are full of phthalates.

‘Perfluorinated chemicals used to make some breathable fabrics are also dangerous — they accumulate in the body and are known to be carcinogenic.

‘And fabric treated with brominated flame retardant, like that very widely used to make children’s sleepwear, is also a worry. It’s been shown in studies with rats to diminish brain capacity.’

Those concerned should seek out one of the burgeoning number of organic fashion brands or consider embracing vintage fashion.

Last night, Adidas and H&M told the Mail they were committed to removing hazardous chemicals from their supply chain by 2020.

Readers: I don’t know about you but if the above doesn’t inspire you to now inspect your clothing labels like you inspect your food labels to stay healthy, I don’t know what will. Toxic clothing is more than just a “yuk!” of a smell – it is dangerous and lethal to our health. Another reason not to buy products made in China. One way to get our manufacturers to stop producing goods for us in toxic China is to stop buying anything made in toxic China. Hit ‘em where it hurts.

/SB: I think it is wonderful that you and your mother are very close. Let me clarify that my mother and I are very close too. I love our relationship and I feel very lucky to have such a good relationship with her as well. But talking daily has never been a part of our lives, and I don’t think it will be. I like not being in communication for awhile (usually no more than a week or so) and then getting together and sharing all that we have been up to. But my opinion is, do whatever works for both, and hopefully both parties are satisfied and happy.

Sandra: Thanks for your comment. I’ll get back to you with my response later.

Chloe: Thanks for sharing your personal story. I’m happy that you are close with your mom and that she was inspired…and now a “staunch advocate for women’s rights”. So cool.

Zen Lill: Thanks for sharing your personal story too. And although, I am aware that the relationship between you and your mom is not that close, it’s nice to know that you still contact her weekly. Your older BFF/mom/ma sounds like a fun woman.

Hi Melanie: I love when new readers join us here. Thanks too for sharing and I welcome you and your daughters to my blog. I look forward to seeing more comments from all of you.

Got to run. The blog is open. Say what is on your mind. Blog me.

Lastly, greed over a great story is surfacing from my “loyal”(?) readers. Boyfriend Befriends Girlfriend’s Perpetrator

Good morning!

Sometimes things turn out right for women. Here’s one story about the rape and abuse of one woman and how with the help of her determined boyfriend, got the perp arrested:

Elric Shawn Millner Allegedly Raped Teen Girl And Her Boyfriend Found Video Evidence: Cops

A former Marine in Texas befriended his girlfriend’s alleged rapist in order to collect video evidence of the assault, cops say.

The alleged victim, whose name has not been released, says that she visited the apartment of Elric Shawn Millner in August 2010, ABC reports. She told police Millner gave her large quantities of alcohol and when she woke up the next morning, she had no recollection of the previous night.

The next morning, however, Millner allegedly showed her videos of himself and another man forcing her to perform sexual acts while she begged them to stop. The victim, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, can be seen vomiting and urinating on herself while Millner laughs, according to KHOU.

The teenager told no one about the incident for almost two years, KTRK reports, when she detailed the assault to her new boyfriend, who had previously served as a military police officer with the U.S. Marines. Determined to take the case to the police, the boyfriend befriended Millner in an attempt to collect the video evidence, according to the Daily Mail.

After winning Millner’s trust, prosecutors say, the ex-Marine convinced Millner to show him the horrifying footage.

Whether or not the boyfriend was able to obtain a copy of the video himself is unclear. Shortly after allegedly viewing it, however, he was able to finally persuade his girlfriend to go to the police about the assault.

Millner was charged on Thursday with aggravated sexual assault and is being held on $50,000 bond. Prosecutors say they now have obtained the video and it will be used as evidence.

Readers: I don’t know about you, but looking at the perpetrator, I want to slap that grin off his face. As you can see he isn’t smiling anymore. Men like this make me sick. They think they can get away with their so-called fun, caring less about the damaging affect their sick actions will have on a young girl for the rest of her life. I say, put the man in jail and throw away the key.

Now…the other man…the real man – the boyfriend – I applaud the him for supporting his girlfriend and doing something. This is the kind of understanding and support that we need more from our men. I HOPE that he is an inspiration to men out there to care more, take the time to listen and if necessary take action. If men stood up to protect the women that they love, perpetrators would think twice about taking advantage of women, and worse, abusing and raping women. I don’t have a blog write for Wonderful Men in the World, but if I did, the brave boyfriend would get the honor today.

That’s it for me. What do you want to say? Blog me.

Peace & Love…always.

Last Abortion Clinic in Mississippi?

Good morning!

Thank you all for the wonderful wishes here, as well as messages through Facebook, e-mails, and phone calls. It was so nice to hear from all of you, and especially surprising to hear from some readers whom I haven’t heard from in awhile, or whom have been loyal readers but have never posted before. Thank you for making this girl feel so loved and appreciated.

I have to say that no matter how many times I see comments from citizens around the world, I am still amazed that so many people from so many different places tune in here. It is truly remarkable and brings me such joy.

Now…onto today’s write.

Judge Keeps Sole Miss. Abortion Clinic Open—for Now

A federal judge temporarily extended an injunction against a law that would effectively end abortion in the state.

UPDATE: Mississippi’s last remaining abortion clinic will remain open for at least a little longer.

The Jackson Free Press reports that a federal judge on Wednesday extended a previously issued injunction against a state law that effectively bans abortion in Mississippi. Judge Daniel Jordan, the paper explains, upheld the July 1 injunction to give himself more time to get familiar with the Mississippi Board of Health rules at the center of the case.

The controversial law requires doctors performing abortions in the state to have admitting privileges at local hospitals, an unusual clearance for OB-GYNs. Although the law doesn’t specifically ban abortions, it would effectively end the procedure in the state by shutting down the only remaining clinic, something Gov. Phil Bryant has openly stated as the law’s objective. The measure, he has previously said, is “the first step in a movement, I believe, to do what we campaigned on: to say that we’re going to try to end abortion in Mississippi.”

Jordan imposed the injunction against the law because he questioned the motives of the bill’s high-profile backers. In Wednesday’s two-hour hearing on the issue, state attorneys defending the new law argued that the judge cannot block the law based on statements that the governor and lieutenant governor made about the intent of the law because they didn’t author the bill.

Meanwhile, the attorney for the clinic argued that the purpose of the law is not to benefit women’s health but to unconstitutionally restrict women’s access to abortion in the state.

Monday, July 2: A federal judge is making sure Mississippi’s only abortion clinic remains open for now. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Jordan issued a temporary restraining order Sunday that blocked a new law that the Jackson Women’s Health Organization says could make Mississippi the only state without an abortion clinic, reports Reuters. Jordan has set a hearing for July 11 to decide whether the block on the law’s implementation should be extended.

“Plaintiffs have offered evidence—including quotes from significant legislative and executive officers—that the act’s purpose is to eliminate abortions in Mississippi,” the judge wrote. “They likewise submitted evidence that no safety or health concerns motivated its passage.”

Gov. Phil Bryant found the decision “disappointing,” according to his spokesman, reports CNN. The governor “plans to work with state leaders to ensure this legislation properly takes effect as soon as possible.”

Wednesday, June 27: Mississippi’s last remaining abortion clinic filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday to block a law that will likely make it impossible for the clinic to operate.

The Associated Press reports that the Jackson Women’s Health Organization contends that the law will effectively ban abortion in Mississippi and endanger women’s health in the process. The new law requires OB-GYNs who perform the procedures at clinics to have hospital admittance privileges, which the clinic says is impossible to get by the time the law will take effect Sunday.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed the bill with the intent to cut back on abortions in the state. Responding to concerns about the effect of the law on the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Bryant said, “If it closes that clinic, then so be it.”

The clinic is asking a federal judge to temporarily block the law from being enforced. The clinic released a statement that unless the judge intervenes, it will be forced to stop providing abortions, “leaving those women with nowhere else to turn.”

Friday, June 22: Beginning next month, women may no longer be able to get an abortion in the state of Mississippi—despite the fact that the procedure will remain technically legal there.

The Associated Press explains: A new law passed earlier this year by the state’s GOP-dominated legislature will require all abortion clinic physicians to have staff and admitting privileges at a local hospital. The problem? None of the three doctors at the Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the state’s last remaining abortion clinic, has those privileges.

The three doctors are board certified in obstetrics and gynecology as the new law requires, but their applications to seven area hospitals for admitting privileges are still pending with the deadline less than two weeks away. If the Jackson clinic is forced to close its doors, Mississippi would become the first state without a dedicated abortion clinic, according to Bloomberg.

Correction: Because of a photo-provider error, a caption in an earlier version of this post misidentified Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder as Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant.
