The Great White: Profit or Protection; which one will prosper?

Posted by michellemoquin on 10th August 2008

Well, I tried to find some info about the Great White Sharks thanks to Mildred and Julie’s suggestion, but there really wasn’t much out there. The reason is because  scientists don’t know much about them. They’ve never been seen mating, or giving birth. That in itself is pretty strange.  We seem to have no problem  catching almost any living creature during ‘the act’  but not the Great White. People get glimpses of Great Whites, but they are difficult to track, and even harder to observe underwater; their speed and agility keep them pretty stellar and under the radar so to speak.

And if they are captured and held in captivity, they are not there for long. The Great White does not like to be held prisoner and will not only refuse to eat, but they will inflict damage on themselves by bumping into whatever is in their way. If they aren’t released when this happens, they are likely to die. A slight imperfection in the tank can make them disoriented which would increase their desire to self inflict damage or become more aggressive.  Hmm…Do you blame them? Sharks are predators. It is their natural state of being.  I can imagine why one would go insane in captivity. No one wants to be held against their will – why would Sharks or any other species feel differently? Thankfully, there have only been a few held in captivity and according to what I have read, when they show signs of stress they are usually released.

  • It is reported  that of of all the species on the planet, The Great White shark has undoubtedly achieved a level of evolutionary perfection:  It has remained unchanged for 400 million years.’
  • However, Great White Sharks are a top predator in the sea, and if they disappear, the entire underwater ecosystem will be affected.  And with the shark populations reduced by 90% over the last 50 years, this is a serious problem.

But it doesn’t stop those from wanting to hunt and kill them for profit. Each year, as many as a hundred million sharks are killed, many slaughtered for their fins which are used to make shark fin soup, a delicacy in Asia. They are also poached for their teeth, and jaws can bring in up to $50,000 in some areas of the world. No wonder they are in danger and endangered…greed has once again stepped in.

Crazy, but some people in this world think that the Great White Sharks are a threat to society! Therefore, the shark is hunted to keep them from eating anyone. Oh that is just silly.  It has even be said that some fishermen kill them because the sharks destroy their fishing nets.  And sadly, some  kill them for the sport, the thrill of knowing that they can kill one of them.  So basically killing for the sake of killing!  That is just so barbaric.  Not only are sharks a slow breeding species to begin with, but I think the rate that they are killing them for their coveted body parts,  tells me that our species is not in danger of them taking over the planet. And even if we could stop the killing of sharks, do people really think they could be a threat to our society? – A ridiculous thought in my mind, but what do I know?

Do I have any readers out there who actually feel this way…that they could actually ‘take over’? I’d be interested to hear from one of you.

Earthlings Mildred and Julie:  I have read that the Great Whites  are now a protected species in Australia, South Africa and California where most of the sharks reside. However aside from these areas millions are still being killed every year and it wouldn’t surprise me if  they are killed illegally even in the protected areas. Millions too many in my mind. What can be done to help? Can you tell us more about these Great Whites since you got to experience the lives of them first hand? How does our ecosystem depend on their livelihood?  And what exactly will happen to our ecosystem if they are not protected? Please tell us what you know – thanks.

Readers: Any of you a lover of sharks? If you have anything to add here, I’d sure appreciate your comments too.

Anonz:  It was very tongue and cheek…Just havin’ a little fun.

ZL: Girlfriend, you are taking me way to seriously, but I guess I can go that route…..Okay…to answer your queries…Offending anyone? You know my answer to that one…’If you don’t like what you read…” I don’t think I need to go any further on that one. Quit and have me and my readers miss out on the love fest?! I think not! If you think what you two say to each other is ‘irrelevant’ to my readers and that they are ‘not even present’ – you need to wake up…if you don’t mind me saying…in a good way. :)  C’mon Lill…if others were talking like this on my blog would YOU pay no attention? Haha! Again, I think not….you and I would be blabbing about it like we do everything else! Enough said….

Peace out.

Gratefully your blog host,

Human Slurpy

Ya  know…I got this sent to me in my email and I thought, ‘How cute –  I just love elephants!’  But then I proceeded to watch this video and what I saw next just tripped me out!

Warning: This video is not for the squeamish!

I can not imagine this happening and I question…How did it happen? Bizarre. This is a new version of a butt plug sans the thrill….well maybe for the man but I bet the elephant was thrilled. He just didn’t want to let go – made his day.  But the guy…Talk about a seriously unwanted mud pack not to mention a bad hair day…Ugh!! I can just hear the guy say, ‘I didn’t want to do the job, but I got sucked into it!” Ahahaaahhhaha!!

Well Readers: Did ya laugh or was it just totally horrifying?  I myself cracked up. :) Don’t be mad…Give me a break, it’s the weekend – I just had to.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
ZL: You are too cool – Thanks so much! Lucy sends a big wet kiss kiss!
Hello Adam:  How goes it? Thank you for breaking it all down for me. I appreciate your thoroughness and the time and energy you spent. Reading your assertion, I felt a bit frustrated because it seems in your opinion, there was nothing different Hercules could’ve done but play it out the way that he did and roll with it.  You asked, If the gods have it in for you what can you actually do to change what they have in mind for you to experience?’  But what about his father Zeus – he too was a God, in fact the most powerful one.  He did not have the hatred that Hera had towards him. So what was Zeus doing this entire time as he observed his sons adventures?
You mentioned that no matter what Hercules did, Hera would see to it that his life was miserable. I am aware that his bad temper was caused by Hera through her constant bombardment of bad breaks.  BUT, could Hercules, and I am not saying this is easy, but if he knew that his life was being manipulated, (I know that he was not aware of this) or even if he didn’t as is the case, could he not have reacted to his circumstances differently even if the outcome was the same?  You said if you were him you would’ve hoped that you would’ve been less violent. Yes, the outcome would’ve been the same but his life may have not been as miserable with a change of attitude. Meaning…could he have let life flow over him, with the mindset, ‘I don’t mind what happens’ or ‘This too shall pass’, which would result in an easier, less stressful life.  Maybe his only mistake is how he reacted to his circumstances. If one is destined to have certain circumstances happen no matter what they do, would it not be easier to just accept and not fight? I know…easier said than done. And the fact still remains as you pointed out, his  ”‘bad temper” was caused by Hera’s manipulation of every key moment in his life. So could he have controlled his emotions at all?
Let’s play….what advice would you give him if you did not know a God was manipulating his life?
There must’ve been a reason his father Zeus did not step in to protect him or alter the circumstances. Or, maybe Zeus did step in at times and maybe Hercules’ life would’ve been much worse had he not. Was it a test? Was Hercules’ reward for his struggles, the attainment of immortality after his brutal death?
I am enjoying this Adam – Thank you. I look forward to reading your reply. Hey, How is AH doing?
Hi Sheikh:  How are you? Hmmm…Ya don’t say?!…very interesting. I would like to see these blogs that are a direct copy of mine. How about providing the links? I want to check these out even if I can’t read them. Thanks.
Keepin’ it short (or so I thought:) and…well, not so sweet – be safe and watch where you’re goin’ today.
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle  ?
Furry friends in need….
Posted by michellemoquin on 28th June 2008
…can you do a good deed?
A few days ago I received an email from the Milo Foundation.  This is one of my favorite non-profits that I have not only offered my services as a volunteer, but I have donated money and a few pairs of my pajamas to several of their benefit events. They are close to my heart because what they do is rescue domestic animals, EVERY animal – they have a no-kill policy and unfortunately and  sadly, a sanctuary in California is proving to be too costly for them to run anymore.
The Milo Foundation has been running a sanctuary in Mendocino County and just recently acquired a space for a permanent indoor adoption center in Marin County.  But before they even had a chance to hang their sign, they are going to have to close their doors. They ran out of funds and in order to keep the sanctuary alive, the heart of the Milo Foundation, they board voted 2-3 that they must close down their Marin operations in order to continue to thrive at the Sanctuary.
Milo operates on a bare bones budget, and the escalating costs of insurance, vet bills, workers comp, coupled with the past years decline in adoption fees and donations while they waited for permits in Marin etc, ended up being way too much for Milo to continue.
Tragically, this means the end of rescuing and placing more than a thousand animals every year. Milo has rescued over 16,000 animals in their 14 year history.  Not having an indoor permanent space to show animals really means the end of rescuing adult cats and many dogs.  They have installed their show cages in the front room in Marin, and they have many momma cats in foster care with their litters of kittens…how they will find them homes is just one of their current concerns.  It’s hard to believe that they are in one of the country’s most affluent and animal friendly counties and to now have to close down is more than heartbreaking!
In hearing this news, a few friends of Milo who have been waiting eagerly for them to open in Marin have offered to help. One generous donor wants to pay the rent for two months, another is donating a restored, classic vehicle for Milo, and Milo renegotiated with the landlord who lowered the rent in an effort to help.  A couple of Milo volunteers have offered to help maintain activities there and care for the animals, help with adoptions, and answer phones. That being said, Milo is hoping to maintain the new adoption center in San Rafael on a fairly low budget for awhile.  But in order for them to even contemplate keeping their facility in San Rafael open, Milo needs further monthly support in the form of $25, $50, $75 and $100 monthly sponsorships, or annual memberships.
The bottom line is this:  Milo needs to raise 100K, a huge amount, before the end of summer! And the Board can only reconsider if there are serious and significant commitments before the end of June!  There is obviously not much time.
I know that only a handful of you my readers live in California but I had to write about this anyway since Milo is near and dear to me. I am writing a check  myself and I am encouraging any of you to donate if you can. I like to fundraise for organizations that I believe in although I don’t normally do it on my blog, but if you are an animal lover like I am you would do the same if you had a reach of thousands of people like I do. Because of all of you, if everyone just donated one dollar, we could all help tremendously.   That is all I ask for the animals.  Thank you from my heart.
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle  ?
The Chosen One
Posted by michellemoquin on 13th June 2008
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMl0rWy3A0Q&hl=en]
Doug needed a good laugh last night, and who am I to turn down a good laugh especially when it involves Jack Black, one of my most fav actors. If you are a JB fan like we are (loved him in ‘School of Rock’), you will love him in this role.  Why do I suspect that his personality is not much different from the characters that he plays? I would just love to have Jack as a friend….I might even adopt him if I could…that is just how cool and funny I think he is.
Anyway, if you haven’t guessed it by now, we went to see the animated Kung Fu Panda…his latest flick. And I have to tell you it was hilarious, although maybe we were the only ones really laughing in the theater.  JB plays a noodle cooking panda named Po who dreams and inspires to becoming the ‘chosen one’: The Dragon Warrior! Unfortunately he is fat, slow, and not only out of shape, but is basically a level zero in Kung Fu.  Dustin Hoffman is perfect at playing the guru, master Shifu, a little reminiscent of Yoda, so he is instantly likable in a very familiar way.  Can you tell who plays ‘Tigress’?
I won’t tell you the rest, but I thought it was sweet, thought provoking, and funny all at the same time.  How could I not like a movie that quotes one of my favorite sayings, ‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift…that is why we call it the present.’
Today is a gift…every day is a gift. Be ‘present’ and enjoy it.
Charley for Mayor!
Posted by michellemoquin on 17th May 2008
“Who is Charley?” you may ask.  Charley is Elliot and Tracey’s beloved cat and he is running for Mayor of Montclair, a small town here in Oakland.  Isn’t he just the coolest cat in his hat?! I thought this was so adorable that I had to post their announcement and wish Charley the very best.  If you would like to vote for Charley (we did!) and support him in his campaign for Mayor-hood read on…
We are happy to announce that our wonderful tabby cat Charley is running for
Pet Mayor of Monclair
!” on a Green platform!!
That’s right; every year the Montclair Veterinary Hospital holds its annual election which is designed to help its sister organization, the MONTCLAIR PET AND WILDLIFE FUND. The mission of the Fund is to support the community by helping pets and wildlife in need and by fostering the peaceful co-existence of humans and animals through education.
This year a total of fourteen animals are vying for the title of “Mayor.” To vote for
your favorite---and we hope that it’s Charley---simply click here: http://www.petandwildlifefund.org/mayor/. On the right hand side you’ll see ‘special events’ and below that ‘meet and vote for your favorite candidate.  Once you’re in, scroll down to Charley!  Each vote costs one dollar and you are urged to vote as often as you like!    Don’t forget – the money goes to a good cause.
Charley is the one candidate (we like to think of him as the purrr-fect candidate for this particular mew-nicipality) with a meaningful and progressive campaign platform: he furrr-vently opposes the state’s plan to spray toxic pesticides over the Bay Area’s animal and human populations this summer. In fact, his campaign motto is: “Spay—NOT Spray!”
So…if you are behind Charley and his desire to see the Bay Area remain toxin-free, we hope that you will see fit to go online and cast your vote for CHARLEY!!   You don't have to be living in the Bay Area to vote!
Thanks ever so much,
Tracey and Elliot
(Charley’s campaign co-managers)
Isn’t that cute?  I just luv it! Hmmm…Maybe Lucy will run next year!
?????
ZL:  Update on Reminex: I basically doubled up on the vits by mistake – my bad and it was a costly one.  I had 8 months of it and used it in 4! Ugh!  I called them and explained my ‘mistake’ and they extended the buy 3 get 1 free for another round, thankfully! So I decided to add another 8 months – what the hell.  I was informed that if I don’t see a difference in 1 year it ain’t gonna happen.  So I’m giving it another go.  I figure the cost is worth it compared to coloring my hair every 3-4 weeks FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE! Yes I am still a bit vain but not as much as I used to be. My roots are showing and I don’t give a damn – well maybe just a little :)
Madaline: It’s nice to see that you are starting to have an affinity for humans again…could it be because of  your stay here on earth that some of the love is returning or is it just AH? :)
Have a beautiful day!
Gratefully your blog host,
michelle  ?
