What’s in your milk?

Good morning.

With so much abuse and rape happening to women worldwide…so much destruction and murder of our fellow human beings…one can hardly think past the inhumanity between humans that plagues the waves of media, to take a moment and pay attention to the inhumane treatment of animals.

But we must.

Every so often I check in on my four-legged friends, and every time I am blown away, and brought to tears because we humans care so little for those that are bred strictly to give their life, so that we humans can survive ours. It is no wonder that I have become vegetarian a few times in my life. And the times that I have had to turn to meat for my own health reasons, I have sought meat from a family farm that I trust treats their animals kindly. It is the least I can do so that I do not contribute to the horrific animal neglect and abuse in our factory farms. But, I need to do more.

We all need to do more.

This is a recent write from Dr. Mercola. As disturbing as it is, I urge you to watch it. These animals deserve for you to feel uncomfortable for a few moments…they struggle and feel more than uncomfortable every day of their lives. These animals deserve to be noticed…deserve to be heard, when their cries of pain and suffering are ignored.

The Everyday Drink that May Contain Blood, Pus and Drugs

By Dr. Mercola

For all of us who love, respect and share our lives with animals, it is devastating to see this appalling abuse of dairy farm animals.

This video was produced by the non-profit organization Animals’ Angels, an internationally active non-profit organization based in Germany, whose mission is to end the abuse of livestock animals and improve the conditions at auctions.

Unfortunately, this video is not one of a kind.

Many other disturbing videos can be found online, documenting animal cruelty by the food industry and others valuing profit above all else.

Why suggest watching such horrible images?

The videos about cruelty are, unfortunately, a necessary evil as they inform concerned citizens about what is endured by animals entrusted to our care.

Without seeing it, many would simply be unable to believe it exists.

And seeing it has a far more visceral impact and is harder to ignore than reading about it.

Awareness is always the first step toward positive change, and GREAT change is needed to improve the lives of these farm animals.

The main points the film makes are quoted and expanded upon below.

The Disturbing Truth about Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)

Most milk no longer comes from cows happily grazing in lush, green fields in the open air, as their advertisements commonly suggest. Most conventional milk comes from cows raised in intensive production systems, also known as confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs). According to Vegan Outreach, farms with fewer than 200 cows are in sharp decline, while the number of very large CAFOs (2,000-plus cows) more than doubled between the years 2000 and 2006. The largest operations have more than 15,000 cows.

About half of the milk sold in the U.S. comes from just four percent of the farms, which are owned by a handful of large corporations.

“Today, most dairy cows are confined to a barren, dry lot, which often holds several thousand animals.”

Most of these large CAFOs have very high animal densities and confine their cows inside barns or in feedlots. Some cows are housed indoors year-round. When lactating, most of the cows are kept tied up in stalls. Cows confined in stalls show signs of stress from social isolation and the inability to lie down, as well as increased susceptibility to a number of diseases. Only USDA-certified organic farms are required to provide some access to pasture for grazing. In 2008, fewer than three percent of U.S. dairy cows were managed on organic farms.

Dairy Cows are Forced into Continuous Birthing and Lactation

As with other mammals, in order to produce milk, a cow must have recently given birth. Dairy cows are forced to start giving birth at about two years of age, then reinseminated about 60 days after every birthing to maintain a yearly schedulei .

“To maintain high milk production, dairy operators want the cows to give birth as often as possible. Reproduction is often manipulated with artificial insemination to ensure the cow will calve and reach peak milk production quickly.”

When lactating, their udders are hooked up to electronic milking machines several times a day, which sometimes inflict electrical shocks, painful lesions, and infections. When producing milk for her calf, a cow will naturally produce about 16 pounds of milk per day. But through genetic manipulation, antibiotics, and hormones such as bovine growth hormone (rBGH), dairy cows are forced to produce 50 pounds of milk per day. RBGH also greatly increases the cow’s risk for mastitis, a painful inflammation of the udder.

Why Some Milk MUST be Pasteurized

“Pasteurized dairy is produced in the filthiest conditions imaginable. Blood, pus, and dangerous pathogens routinely end up in pasteurized milk.”

CAFO animals are given large quantities of antibiotics, vaccines, vitamins, and other potentially toxic drugs to prevent the diseases that would normally overtake them as a result of living in such filthy, overcrowded conditions. Those chemicals get passed along to you in the milk you consume. In fact, using a highly sensitive test, scientists have detected as man as 20 painkillers, antibiotics and growth hormones in samples of cow’s milk.

Newborn Calves are Ripped Away from their Mothers

“Although a cow’s natural life expectancy is between 20 and 25 years, most dairy cows are slaughtered between the ages of four and six.”

Cows can naturally live for 20 to 25 years, but on industrial dairy farms they’re usually killed at about five years of age—that is, if they even live that long. Many dairy cows die by age three or four, exhausted by constant lactation and frequent disease. In some countries where cows are revered, such as India and Nepal, cows are commonly kept as pets. Cows are very social animals, being sturdy yet gentle, and make wonderful pets for families with children.ii Miniature cows are even beginning to be bred as pets in the United States.

“After birthing, the calves are often immediately taken away from their mothers. While the female calves remain on the farm to replace other “spent” daily cows, the male calves, often called the “unwanted by-product” of the dairy industry, are usually shipped to auction and sold to veal operations.”

The female calves are commonly mutilated by tail docking, dehorning, and the removal of “extra teats.” Most female calves are fed colostrum until they are weaned at eight weeks, and then fed a milk replacer or “waste milk” that is unfit to be sold for human consumption. Each year, hundreds of thousands of female calves die between 48 hours and eight weeks of age, mostly due to diarrhea (calf scours) and other digestive problems.

The Torture of Veal Calves

“Many of the bull calves, with their umbilical cords still attached and unable to stand by themselves, are often too weak to survive and die at the auction.”

Many consumers don’t realize that veal is a direct by-product of the dairy industry. Newborn bull calves are taken away from their mothers and shipped off to veal producers for a short life of torture. Some bull calves are killed within a few days of their birth, but many are harvested for veal. These veal calves are typically kept immobilized in tiny crates so that their flesh stays tender, until they are slaughtered at 16 to 20 weeks of age. Their confinement is so extreme that they cannot even turn around or lie down comfortably. This abuse begins as young as one day old.

In order to make their flesh white, the veal calves are fed a low iron, nutritionally deficient liquid diet that makes them ill; they frequently develop anemia, diarrhea, and pneumonia.iii According to John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution and several other booksiv :

“The veal calf would actually have more space if, instead of chaining him in such a stall, you stuffed him into the trunk of a subcompact car and kept him there for his entire life.”

Sickly Animals are Treated Like Piles of Waste

The term “downer” refers to an animal that is too injured, weak, or sick to stand and walk. The leading causes are complications from calving and injuries from slipping and falling, most often occurring within one day of giving birth. The exact number of downer cattle on American farms or feedlots is estimated to be 500,000 animals per year. Most are dairy cows. You can see on the video how these poor animals are mistreated, being pushed around by tractors and forklifts as if they were piles of waste.

“When they reach auction, many dairy cows will be weakened and emaciated. Because of their poor state of health, these animals have a high risk of becoming non-ambulatory.”

Another major factor causing these animals to become ill is their transport to auction. Animals are transported thousands of miles over land and sea, and subjected to enormous stress. Frequently these transports do not meet legal requirements.  The conditions of animal transport are such a huge problem that Animals’ Angels has a division specifically committed to eliminating long-distance transports.v

Unnatural Diets Lead to Painful Udder and Hoof Infections

The natural diet for a cow is grass, but a grass diet doesn’t result in an extraordinarily high milk yield. Therefore, conventional dairy farms put their cows on high grain diets (mostly corn), and diets that are also high in cheap protein, such as genetically engineered soy and animal by-products. These foods are hard for cows to digest and cause health problems. These unnatural diets, combined with filthy and overcrowded living conditions, create an environment in which metabolic disorders and infections are commonplace. Millions of cows are suffering mercilessly and needlessly at the hands of big agribusinesses that fancy themselves as “dairy farmers.”

“By the time they arrive at the auction to be sold to a meat buyer, 33 percent of dairy cows will have developed mastitis, a very painful udder infection. Many cows will be limping and in pain due to laminitis, an inflammation of the hoof.”

Raw Milk may be the Solution for You AND the Cows

If you want to continue consuming milk and milk products, I suggest you get them in the raw from organic dairy farmers who are set up specifically to produce high-quality, clean, nutritious raw dairy products. You can find milk, cheese, and other dairy products in raw form, although it may take a little searching. High-quality raw milk has an abundance of nutritional elements, including:

  • Valuable enzymes (which are destroyed by pasteurization)
  • Natural butterfat helps your body to absorb and utilize vitamins and minerals (also destroyed by pasteurization)
  • Healthy unoxidized cholesterol
  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which fights cancer and may help reduce body fat
  • Omega-3 fats and omega-6 fats in a better ratio than conventional milk

ALL Raw Milk is Not Safe—You Must Know What to Look for

There’s a vast difference in quality between the milk of organically raised, grass-fed “happy cows,” and that from conventionally raised, confined, grain-fed cows.

Raw, unpasteurized milk from CAFOs would be dangerous to consume.

Conventional dairy farms are not typically set up to produce milk that is safe and pure enough to be consumed raw. And really, the very idea of producing mass quantities of milk from huge numbers of cows confined to one area is contrary to the very nature of “healthy” milk. When buying raw milk, it’s important to make sure you’re buying milk that’s been produced with the intention of being consumed raw—and not just unpasteurized milk from conventional dairy operations.

It would cost large industrial dairies an enormous amount of money to clean up their operations enough to turn out milk that would be SAFE to drink raw, since it’s often loaded with blood, pus, hormones, dangerous pathogens and other sludge that you wouldn’t want to ingest under any circumstances.

Realize that when you consume conventional pasteurized supermarket milk, you are likely drinking this sludge—it’s just “cooked sludge.”

Voting with your wallet or pocketbook is the best way to send a message to the factory farm industry that there is a market for ethically raised livestock. By purchasing milk from dairy farmers who are doing things right, you are showing kindness to cows everywhere, decreasing their chances of suffering tragic and miserable lives, one gallon at a time. If you object to factory farming practices and the mistreatment of animals, and you are still buying conventional dairy products, then your actions are not aligned with your beliefs.  If you had a difficult time watching this video but you continue to buy these products, then it may be time to recommit or reevaluate your values.

Readers: Are you an Animal’s Angel? Please dedicate some time in your life to give back to those that gave theirs. Thank you. If you haven’t an affinity for animals, and unfortunately there are many humans who don’t…if nothing drives you but self-preservation, then at least think of what you are putting in your body when you support these factory farms. They’re in it for the profit – they care little about the animals, and not much more about you. Think about it. They’re selling you toxic meat and milk from disease ridden sick cows for your consumption.

peace & love to our four-legged friends.

“Just Noticing”: Observations Of A Blogger

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 1st April 2012

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

Over the years that I have been blogging, I have written about or posted articles about the happenings in several African countries: Congo, Sudan, Chad, Libya, Egypt, etc. When we think of these countries we don’t have to think too hard about the goings on, as they are still important topics in the news. But recently I read about a country bordering the southwest side of Chad – Cameroon.

“Just noticing…”

…China just can’t leave the wildlife alone. Their recent demand for ivory ornaments is devastating the Elephant population in Cameroon.

Elephants Being Massacred in Cameroon

Elephants Being Massacred in Cameroon

Invading Sudanese horsemen have slaughtered half of the elephants in one of Cameroon’s reserves.

More than 200 elephants have been slaughtered by poachers in three months. Troops arrived too late to stop the massacre, and one soldier has been killed. In the last week, twenty more elephants were killed.

In the 1980s, there were an estimated 3,000 elephants in the Bouba N’Djida park. Now there are less than 400 remaining alive. 150 soldiers have confiscated 49 tusks, representing 25 dead elephants.

“The forces arrived too late to save most of the park’s elephants, and were too few to deter the poachers,” Natasha Kofoworola Quist, director of the World Wildlife Fund’s Central Africa program told AP.

In neighboring Chad in the 1970s, there were more than 400,000 elephants and now there are less than 8,000. The elephant population in the Central African Republic has been decimated. Even Kenya has seen an 80% decline in its elephant population over the last four decades.

The geopolitical problems in the Sudan and Chad makes it easy for the insurgents to cross into Cameroon and poach wildlife to finance their battles.

Wildlife activists blame China’s growing footprint in Africa for an unprecedented surge in poaching elephants for their tusks. Most are believed to be smuggled to China and Thailand to make ivory ornaments.

Growing demand for ivory in China is “the leading driver behind the illegal trade in ivory today,” said Tom Milliken, an elephant and rhino expert for the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC. China has a legal ivory market that is supposed to be highly controlled but tons and tons of illegal ivory has made its way there in recent years, said the Zimbabwe-based Milliken, who spoke in a conference call with several World Wildlife Fund officers.

The rains begin next month and hopefully that should at least slow down this systematic slaughter.

*******

Readers: Obviously the legal ivory market in China is not highly controlled or their wouldn’t be this issue of contraband ivory. My feeling is this: If you’re going to allow legal ivory to be sold knowing that you can make a good profit, as the ivory is in high demand, are you going to be that concerned when illegal ivory is also being sold, when you can make even more of a profit? Evidently not.

Quite frankly, I don’t care if there are some parts of this world where killing an elephant for its tusks is legal. I think it should be illegal everywhere. Killing an elephant for its ivory tusks and endangering this beautiful mammal is just not right.

What is it with the Chinese and their greedy need of adding another ivory trinket to their collection, at the expense of beautiful harmless mammals? It appears that when the Chinese reach a certain level of wealth, they, like many wealthy people in many other countries, want to be able to buy things that others can’t afford.

Almost a year ago Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki set fire to more than five tons of elephant ivory to bring attention to the problem of poaching.

About 335 ivory tusks and 41,000 trinkets worth about $16,290,000 ( £10 million) were burned. It had been confiscated by officials in Singapore in 2002 and found to be from Zambia and Malawai, says the Guardian.

Africa had about 1.3 million elephants in the 1970s but now has only about 500,000. Kenya currently has about 37,000, “up from the 16,000 it had at the height of the crisis in 1989 but far below the country’s peak.”

In 1989, Kenyan officials first set fire to huge store of ivory, as a wake-up call about the crisis of the declining elephant population. Elephants numbers have increased, but activists fear another crisis as the middle class in China grows and “seeks to satisfy its appetite for ivory,” just as the growing Chinese middle class’s taste for shark’s fin soup has led to rising demand for sharks, an endangered species. A global ban on ivory was implemented in 1989 and temporarily halted the elephants’ decline, but its numbers are again in danger due to the “booming demand” for ivory in Asia and more conflicts between humans and elephants as the former encroach on the animals’ land.

It seems the greed of the middle class Chinese doesn’t stop there. Coveting the precious ivory is only one destructive pleasure – Chinese can’t seem to get enough of shark fin soup either. What other harmless species will be the next victim of such greedy appetites?

Janaki: You don’t have time to read them all. Now you know how I feel everyday. :)

K: All good questions, and we al know the answers.

JB: Evidently not. You saw what happened in the 2010 elections. Let’s HOPE people remember that lazy day in November when the democrats decided to stay home, and the republicans took their place.

DC: I don’t know where you got your stats, because I have read several articles that don’t concur with your claim. Here’s one:

Deaths Nearly Triple Since “Stand Your Ground” Enacted

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – As some state lawmakers are calling for a re-thinking of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows people to defend themselves from danger without the need to first try to get away, an analysis of state data shows deaths due to self defense are up over 200 percent since the law took effect.

The shooting death of Trayvon Martin by an armed, self-appointed Central Florida crime watch volunteer who claimed he shot in self defense has sparked a national debate about Florida’s law, technically known as the Castle doctrine.

Until 2005, it was generally considered self defense if someone tried to get into your home or invade your property, so long as you could show deadly force was the last resort. In 2005, the “Stand your Ground” law removed the need to retreat before using force, even in public.

That’s the justification George Zimmerman used when he shot and killed Miami Gardens teen Treyvon Martin, who was returning to his father’s fiance’s house from a convenience store visit when Zimmerman spotted him and deemed him suspicious. Before the police he called arrived, he claims Martin attacked him and he shot in fear for his life.

Police accepted his story, and let him go, sparking national outrage. Zimmerman remains free.

That kind of thing is happening a lot, according to FDLE statistics obtained by CBS4′s David Sutta.

According to state crime stats, Florida averaged 12 “justifiable homicide” deaths a year from 2000-2004. After “Stand your Ground” was passed in 2005, the number of “justifiable” deaths has almost tripled to an average of 35 a year, an increase of 283% from 2005-2010.

“The Legislature needs to take a look at Stand Your Ground,” Florida Sen. Oscar Braynon, D-Miami Gardens told CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald, “This is a perfect case of where it goes awry. This could only be the beginning of more problems down the road. It has unintended consequences.”

“When the Legislature passed this in 2005, I don’t think they planned for people who would go out and become vigilantes or be like some weird Batman who would go out and kill little kids like Trayvon.”

Gov. Rick Scott, speaking with reporters following a Cabinet meeting, agreed, though without committing to supporting any particular legislation. “When you see any violence it’s always positive to … go back and look at existing law and see the impact and the consequences of it,” Scott said.

“If there’s something that we need to adjust I’m hopeful that the Legislature would be interested in taking that up.”

TG: You and me both. This recent passage of the Paul Ryan Budget in the House is not good and not something I want. The House voted 228-191 to pass the bill with 10 Republicans opposing it. Democrats unanimously opposed the measure.

I will quote Nancy Pelosi and urge my readers to follow suit with her wishes:

“For the sake of our seniors, for our families, for our children, for our workers—I urge my colleagues to vote ‘no’ on the Republican plan,” Pelosi said. House Democrats proposed their own budget, which the House shot down.

Ana: Thank you for the complimentary kind words.

Peace & Love, everyone.

Flap Your Lips Friday

Good morning!

I haven’t written about my four-legged friends in awhile so I thought today I would give them some blog time. I have heard of military dogs but I was not sure what positions they held, nor what duties they perform. Then I came across this article that I couldn’t resist posting. Dogs have always been considered  our “best friends”.  And it is no different at times of war. Our soldiers fighting for our country, are our heros. But so are our four-legged friends who join them.

Here’s a sweet little write that gives kudos to our friends who stand by to watch and guard, putting their lives on the line…through rain and bullets to protect those protecting us.

Adorable War Dogs and Their Stories (PHOTOS)

Military working dogs and their handlers can be together 24/7 while deployed. More often than not, the canine warriors eat and work and socialize with their handlers. They sleep in or near their handlers’ cots. Some dogs crawl right into their sleeping bags. And on long missions, they can try to catch some winks together in foxholes.

A handler’s life is in his dog’s nose, and dog’s life in his handler’s hands. The bond is deep, utterly indescribable, most handlers will tell you.

“You know this dog so well, and he knows you. The dog probably knows you better than your spouse does,” says Marine Sergeant Mark Vierig.

Master Chief Scott Thompson, the NCO in charge of dog operations in Afghanistan for a year, agrees. “The bond will pull you through the toughest situations,” he says. “I don’t think there’s anything else in the world that can compare to the bond between a handler and dog.”

My new book, Soldier Dogs: The Untold Story of America’s Canine Heroes [Penguin Group, $26.95], opens up the world of military working dogs as never before, shedding new light on every aspect of the military dog world, including these incomparable bonds

Here are some photos dogs in the book, with heartwarming vignettes about their relationships with their handlers.

Military working dog Lex L479 and his handler, Marine Sgt. Mark Vierig, would go to sleep in the foxholes they shared for a month while on patrol in Afghanistan during the cold, wet winter. Soon after Vierig fell asleep, the Belgian Malinois would crawl out from their tarp-protected foxhole and stand guard over him through the night – often in torrential rains. The dog did not sit, but stood, head erect, large triangular ears at attention and focused for sounds, eyes peering into the darkness for any sign of intrusion. His coat was soaked with rain, but he stood riveted, noble. “I’d tell him, ‘Hey you, come on in here!’ ” and he’d leave his post and go to his subterranean room – at least until Vierig fell asleep again.

Nothing fazed Patrick L722. During one firefight, Patrick lay beside his handler, Marine Cpl. Charles “Cody” Haliscak, in the tall grass as Haliscak and the rest of the squad engaged the Taliban. But the Belgian Malinois wasn’t lying there cowering. He was lying there eating grass as the bullets screamed by. One day this loyal, calm dog alerted Halisack to an improvised explosive device (IED), saving the lives of the troops who were following him. Tragically, the IED exploded under him. “I lost my best friend. He was my hero,” says Haliscak.

The formidable-looking German shepherd, Rex L274, stands guard as his soldiers take a lunch break in their Stryker vehicle. He looked the role of fearsome warrior, but Rex was actually a gentle giant. The specialized search dog did not make it as a patrol dog because he was a sweet, sensitive fellow. “If you were playing and you acted as if he bit you, he’d let go and look all sad,” Ingraham says. But she knew he would put his life on the line to protect her.

Lars J274 gets laughs wherever he shows up as a bomb-sniffing military working dog. “Fear the terriers!” a sailor cries as the little Jack Russell terrier and his handler approach a nuclear submarine Lars will check for explosives. Lars, who has a Napoleon complex, doesn’t seem to notice the lighthearted atmosphere he creates in his wake. His handler, Navy MA3 Cameron Frost, has learned to roll with the jokes. Lars is not the dog he imagined being partnered with when he became a Navy dog handler, “but he grows on you.”

Robby D131 was Air Force Staff Sgt. James Bailey’s first military working dog. Robby, however, was a veteran of three deployments, and Bailey says Robby taught him the ropes when they deployed to Iraq. Together in war, now together in peace, the two retired from the military and are enjoying life together in a leafy Virginia suburb. “It’s great to be able to give back to him and try to repay the life-long sacrifice he has given to me, his other handlers, and the country,” says Bailey.

“Just Noticing”: Observations Of A Blogger

Good morning!

Okay…so what is cute, furry and wonderful to cuddle with? If you guessed “A puppy!”  You are soo right. However…

“Just noticing”…

...does this little guy remind you of something else you love to cuddle up to?

Everyone loves a puppy. Especially a Golden Retriever puppy.

So much fluff! So much goofiness!

But one Redditor noticed that this puppy looked a little, shall we say different, from above.

Is the humor immature? Sure. But according to The Daily What the Tumblr post containing the photo got over 100,000 notes overnight, so it just goes to show how sometimes all it takes is a little potty humor to get the Internet giggling.

*T*O*O*C*U*T*E*

Readers: I can’t think of two better things that I love combined into one. :) Just bringin’ a little humor to this beautiful Sunday.

Speaking of humor,  I see all of you are chatting about Romney and Sheriff Paul Babeu –  The republican party is such a joke – can anyone be more hypocritical? Once again, why would anyone vote for this party?

I’m steppin’ out of this one – Let the sweet boys fight it out.

Blog me.

xoxo

Cruelty is Cruelty

Good morning!

In 2008, I, along with others, fought really hard to pass Prop 2. California  voters overwhelmingly passed it with the intention of outlawing egg factory cages. We were determined to make California be a cage-free state. I was so delighted that the hens would soon be able to freely spread their wings, instead of living in cruel cramped quarters. My thought is this for the hens and all animals: The least we can do is provide those who give us their lives or give us food to nourish ourselves, a healthy, comfortable, stress-free environment. Is that too much to ask? Evidently, yes.

Today the egg industry wants to prevent what we have fought so hard for. This is what I just received in the mail:

A bill was just introduced in Congress that would keep laying hens locked in egg factory cages so cramped that they could not even spread their wings. This is a dirrect assault upon California law. The egg factories opposing Prop 2, having lost at the ballot box, are now trying a different tactic. They have introduced a Rotten Egg Bill – also know as the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012 ( H.R. 3798). Substituting one cruel metal cage for another, the industry’s openly stated intention is to:

  • Nullify Proposition 2 and all other existing state laws that ban or restrict battery cages.
  • Deny state legislatures the ability to ever enact laws to outlaw cages or otherwise regulate egg factory conditions.
  • Deprive voters of the right and ability to ever pass ballot measures banning egg factory cages.

The outrageous measure is of course being sponsored by the same egg factory group that opposed California’s Prop 2 – The United Egg Producers (UEP). And using HSUS and other tagalongs for political cover, UEP claims that its legislation would eventually result in “progress” for laying hens. Yeah right. We can’t fall for their BS. The reality is this: The egg industry merely agreed to slowly  - at the glacial pace of 18 years – continue the meager changes in battery cage conditions that are already occurring due to state laws and public pressure.

The reality is this for the hens: The Rotten Egg Bill (H.R. 3798) would keep hens forever suffering in their cramped metal cages, and basically we would be able to do nothing about it – our voting rights would be taken away!  How crazy is that?  Prop 2 was win for the hens… an important step.

We need to save Proposition 2. Tell Congress NOT to nullify California’s state laws and voting rights!Stop the Rotten Egg Bill.

*****

Readers: I realize that many people don’t think about much abut the eggs they buy when they shop. But I like so many other do.  For me, I have a very difficult time when it comes to the livelihood and well-being of animals…even hens, as you see here, when they are abused. I have the ability to feel such compassion that it is literally painful for me.

And it doesn’t go away when the video ends. I imagine myself in a cage with no where to move and the horrible feelings of going crazy from the confinement. I know it’s crazy –   can you imagine how the hens feel? I would not want to endure this, and I’m sure the hens, nor any other animal or being does either.

It does not matter whether they were born in a cage or not, their nature is to be free doing the things that come naturally…things that they cannot do while confined to a cage. The pain, suffering and abuse is unnecessary. But of course, as in many things, the greed to be as profitable as possible is the motivating factor, and the animals are the ones who suffer because of this.

I take pride that I can put myself in the shoes of others…even animals, yet at the same time, it can be very overwhelming and stressful because the abuse is so prevalent on our planet…in our faces daily in one way or another. Thankfully as I have gotten older, I do not let it get the best of me, and my passion to protect remains steady.

All I ask is that if you eat lots of eggs, look at what you are buying. Are you supporting the horrific factory farming? I know they are more expensive but can you eat less and buy from the smaller farms that support “cage-free” environments?  I am not saying that “cage-free” factories are innocent, but it is a step in the right direction.

As always, I post these things hoping that one of them hits a nerve and becomes a passion for you as well. We can’t all take on all the suffering of those in this world. But we can find something, whatever it be…the environment, a child, an animal, or cause, that pulls on us to do more.  I can only tell you how wonderful it feels when you know you are making a difference. Thanks.
