African American youth invents surgical technique at age 14

Good morning!

Big applause to this bright young man!

African American youth invents surgical technique at age 14

Young, Gifted and Black Series

He is young, he is gifted and he is Black. At the age of 14, Tony Hansberry II certainly holds grounded status in the league of exceptional youth.

“Tony Hansberry II isn’t waiting to finish medical school to contribute to improved medicalcare. He has already developed a stitching technique that can be used to reduce surgical complications, as well as the chance of error among less experienced surgeons,” writes Jackie Jones in BlackAmericaWeb.com on June 16, 2009.

“The project I did was basically the comparison of novel laparoscopic instruments in doing ahysterectomy repair,” reveals Hansberry.

At the time, Hansberry was a high school freshman at the Darnell-Cookman Middle/HighSchool of the Medical Arts in Jacksonville, Florida, a special medical magnet school that allows its students to take advanced classes in medicine. Informational documents cite that students at the school are able to master suturing in eighth grade. Suturing is the surgical stitching of a wound.

The son of a registered nurse and an African Methodist Episcopal church pastor, the Darnell-Cookman student said that “I just want to help people and be respected, knowing that I can save lives.” His goal is to become a neurosurgeon.

Jones reports that the idea for his unique procedure was conceived during the summer of 2008 while enrolled as an intern at the University of Florida ’s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville.

It was noted that Hansberry responded to a challenge to improve a procedure called the “endo stitch” used in hysterectomies that could not be clamped down properly to close the tube where the patient’s uterus had been. Using a medical dummy, the 14-year-old devised a vertical way to apply the endo stitch, completing the stitching in a third of the time of traditional surgery.

“It took me a day or two to come up with the concept,” Hansberry said in the Jones interview.

He was supervised by urogynecologist Dr. Brent Siebel and Bruce Nappi, administrative director of the Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research. Hansberry’s accomplishment, it is reported, won second place in the medical category regional science fair in February 2009.

“Education experts say that youngsters as young as 10 can experience great achievement at an early age if their thirst for knowledge is encouraged and they are given opportunities to shadow professionals and get internships,” as quoted by Jones.

In April of 2009, Hansberry presented his findings at a medical conference at the University of Florida before an audience of doctors and board-certified surgeons. Medical lead teacher Angela Tenbroeck is quoted noting that in many ways, Hansberry is a typical student, but that he is way ahead of his classmates when it comes to surgical skills.

“I would put him up against a first-year med student. He’s an outstanding young man and I am proud to have him representing us,” she says. As an 11th- grader at the age of 16, the January 25, 2011 Jacksonville.com blog reports that Hansberry was one of nine youth who were selected to travel to Washington that February to present the Boy Scouts of America Report to the Nation to President Barack Obama.

District director for the Boy Scouts of America Lawrence Norman in the Jacksonville report said that when district leaders were asked to recommend an exemplary Scout, “Tony’s name kept coming up.”

Hansberry was also introduced at the annual meeting of the North Florida Council of The Boy Scouts at the University of North Florida on January 25, 2011.

According to Jacksonville writer Justin Sacharoff, the Boy Scouts of America Report to the Nation features the year’s achievements including national service, conservation, healthy living and community involvement.

The Darnell-Cookman Middle/ High School of the Medical Arts is a school within the Duval County Public Schools system in Jacksonville. It is a National Blue Ribbon School and also an “A” school in the State of Florida school grading system.

The school had its beginnings nearly 200 years ago when Methodist minister Reverend S.B. Darnell moved to Jacksonville to serve as pastor of Ebenezer Methodist- Episcopal Church. In the late 1800s, he founded the Cookman Institute. It was the first school of highereducation for African Americans in the state of Florida specializing in the religious and academic preparation of teachers.

Under the leadership of Darnell, the school served thousands of young Black men and women until it was destroyed in the Great Jacksonville Fire of 1901. The Reverend Alfred Cookman, a close friend of Reverend Darnell, helped raise the money to rebuild the school. Today, Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts has an enrollment upwards of 1,100 students in grades 6-12. The first graduating class will receive their diplomas in the spring of 2012.

This “Young, Gifted and Black” series is proud to present its first writing during this 2012 February Black History Month by sharing the exemplary modeled accomplishment of Tony Hansberry II. But in reality, Hansberry’s achievement historically in our communities is really not unusual or extraordinary for our African American students when they are taught, groomed and culturally inspired in an academically supportive instructional environment unique to how we learn, grow, and develop mentally, socially, emotionally, and even psychologically as Black youth in today’s challenging diverse society.

And added to this point in his words, our young neurosurgeon to be says that, “It’s not really hard if you have a passion for it.”

One of the best things about America is its diversity. One of its worse is its racism. When one of its OTWs can evade the racism, this can result.

He is young, he is gifted and he is Black. At the age of 14, Tony Hansberry II certainly holds grounded status in the league of exceptional youth.

Tony Hansberry II certainly is an exceptional, gifted young man and happens to be Black in color.

There have been, and are many gifted Black men — young and old — in the world who offer so much in all fields of Science and Medicine and every field imaginable.

I suppose it was more difficult for him to get where he is, but with an intellect as high as his, being Black should not hinder him in the future. He’s got the “Right Stuff” and we will hear more about him in the future for his achievements.

After all, he was only 14 years old and a freshman attending a Middle/High School of Medical Arts in Jacksonville, Florida when he invention was made. He attends a special magnet school that allows its students to take advanced classes in Medicine. He will be in his choice of Medical Schools when he reaches that river to cross.

He will make a great Neurosurgeon in the coming years. He could suture any injury I might receive at any time.

I am color-blind and do not believe it has anything to do with one’s intellect. In fact, there are so many OTWs being held back by their color, the neighborhoods they live in and their Parent’s financial situations. One has to be exceptionally gifted to achieve what Tony has, but it is not impossible.

I wish him all the success he deserves in the future. He will achieve it.

  6. HOWIE Says:

Sorry Folks, It is not Flap Your Lips Friday :) It is more like “Sit on Your Ass Saturday.”

Oh Well, I went an entire day thinking it way Friday. Worse things have happened in my life.

Anyway … This is still a good day to comment and read other comments.

    The Healing Power of Drawing

When we learn that we have a serious illness, we may be overwhelmed with emotion and barely able to think straight.

Bernie Siegel, MD, who wrote Love, Medicine & Miracles, a groundbreaking book on the power of attitude and outlook on healing, suggests a strategy that can help us cope.

He says that we should get out our crayons and markers and draw—yes, draw. This can help relieve our fears and anxiety—and may even give us insight into feelings we are not consciously aware of.

    THE VISUAL IS REAL

Just as the psychotherapist Carl Jung once diagnosed a brain tumor based only on images in a patient’s dreams, images can give reliable hints about what’s happening in the body.

Suppose that a patient draws a stream with a beaver dam. The stream could represent the coronary arteries, and the dam might indicate that those vessels are blocked. This might sound far-fetched, but real-life stories indicate that people can visualize their internal structures.

Even when the images that we imagine and draw aren’t literally true, they can provide important insights. I once looked at a picture that was drawn by a child with cerebral palsy.

She drew her house, which in real life had many flights of stairs, in flaming red. The red symbolized the angst she felt in a house that she was physically unable to navigate.

    DRAW YOUR INSIGHTS

Start with a sheet of white paper and every possible color of crayon or marker. Take a few moments to think about what you want to draw.

It doesn’t have to be about a symptom or a treatment—let your instincts tell you what to draw.

Set it aside. While you’re drawing, your emotions and unconscious mind are at work. Just the act of drawing can have a calming effect, but there also may be meanings present in the drawing.

A day later, when you look at the picture again, you may be able to see it intellectually and extract the meanings. What to look for…

Context. One part of a drawing gets meaning from other parts. Cancer patients often draw themselves, then show the cancer on another part of the page. They can’t admit that the disease is a part of them.

Content. It always means something when you choose a particular image. A patient starting chemotherapy, for example, might show a devil giving poison.

Sometimes what we don’t draw is important. Perhaps you drew a human figure without hands. It could be that you’re struggling to get a grip on things or that you’re unable to reach out for what you need.

Examine relationships. Did you draw a figure sitting alone on a couch, perhaps with other figures on a different part of the page?

This indicates a sense of loneliness and isolation.
Show it to others. Often we have trouble interpreting our own drawings.

Different people will see different things—and their opinions will spark conversations that can lead to further insights.

Consider emotion. Your feelings will come out in every drawing. I’ve known cancer patients who were so frightened by chemotherapy that they initially refused to have it.

But then they would show me beautiful pictures with symbols of health, indicating that they knew, intuitively, that the treatment was right.

Source: Bernie Siegel, MD, founder of Exceptional Cancer Patients, a form of individual and group therapy. A retired surgeon based in Woodbridge, Connecticut, he is author of the best seller Love, Medicine & Miracles (Morrow).

His most recent book, with Jennifer Sander, is Faith, Hope & Healing: Inspiring Lessons Learned from People Living with Cancer (Wiley). http://www.BernieSiegelMD.com

    Howie,

We, in Israel are very proud of the help you provide in educating others about Israel and the encouragement you and Michelle give to women to stick together against the madness of men.

Of course, not all men are bad, You and Al are on this blog regularly showing that in abundance. But as you two both have cited on numerous occasions, most men are about themselves and their wars.

We women are usually just “collateral damage” to men. I serve my country here so I have as much right to differ with a man about Israel’s policies as the next person.

I enjoy reading your column Howie, regardless of the topic you choose to write about. It makes me proud to see a Jew who is not afraid to speak his mind in America.

Michelle, we are planning a big march in Damascus tomorrow. Today we were shot at, but that will not deter us.

  17. SD Says:

By vetoing the UN resolution, China and Russia have cleared the way for Bashar and his army to launch an ever increasing brutal and inhuman war on its own people.

It takes dictatorships to understand one. For China and Russia money has no color or smell and the opportunity to sell weapons to bashar and his thugs is just another way to increase their BNP.

I have therefore decided to hit Russia and China on where hurts the most, namely on their wallet. I therefore strongly encourage everybody out there to do the same:

Boycott products produced in china. As our diplomats failed again, it is our duty to do what we can to punish countries that support such bloodshed on innocent people.

Once again gay white man has to resign because he wants to support a the republican party.

Why are american white women jumped on so much. It seems that the same logic applied to make the the dumbest group of females on the planet can be applied to white males, also, at least gay white males.

Or is it that racism trumps everything including self preservation. How else can one explain the continued idiotic desire that drives gay white men to the republican party?

As you americans are so fond of saying, “HELLO,” the republican party hates gays. The republican party equates homosexuality with bestiality.

  21. MT Says:

A Republican congressional candidate, stepped down because he was Gay and from the Romney camp.

You just have to know that THIS BIT OF NEWS is going to TEAR UP THE AIRWAVES WITH SANTORUM CAMPAIGN ADS against ROMNEY.

A real live Gay person? in the republican camp? Wonder if that’s an EMBARRASSMENT to the entire GOP orginization.

Heck they (gop) knocked the heck out of “Barney Franks” for being gay. how are they going to handle this one.

  22. Vivian Says:

C’mon Romney is either gay or when the next gay man dies, he will get the spot.

Look at this sweet man. Don’t tell me he didn’t know that Sheriff Babeu was gay. How many late night private discussions you think Romney and Babeu have had?

Evidently they were very productive for Romney to make him the Co-Chair of his presidential campaign. And how about Paul Babeu rush to take a bullet for Romney, what devoted lover wouldn’t?

    Yeah this topic has legs.

It appears there is absolutely NO VETTING of republican candidates and their staffs anymore.

Republicans just scrape up anyone who say the “right” things (Sarah Palin anyone?). Maybe if they’d do some vetting they wouldn’t run into these types of problems, lol!

  29. HP Says:

The Internet makes it difficult for these racist to hide to their true colors. This reminds me of stories from the 50s when the White “Christian” Klansman would have a Black girl friend and two mixed-race babies on the side.

  30. Gwen Says:

When will the public tire of these republican hypocrites?

  31. Raymond Says:

So KP, are you suggesting that the republican “VETTING” process be one of excluding gays?

  32. MC Says:
