Another Black Man Murdered by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, NC

GOOD MORNING.

Social Butterfly: I read more on Terrence Crutcher. I am so sad and disgusted over this, and disheartened with humanity. The Family is seeking criminal charges. I signed. But will this help? After checking out the news headlines we can read, the murder of black men continue.

Readers: I am feeling extremely sad, disgusted, and outraged right now over this country. With these recent killings…I know, I know…this is obscenely “normal”…happening to so many black men around the country – it is a “normal” that needs to change. Yet, we don’t hear about all of these senseless killings unless there is some sort of uproar.

#BLM #BlackLiveMatter

Here’s the latest uproar from the Huff Po:

Police In North Carolina Fatally Shoot Black Man, Sparking Protests

Protests erupted after the sixth killing of a civilian by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police in the past year.

Police in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Tuesday fatally shot a black man they said was armed as they searched for someone else, sparking violent protests that injured more than 12 officers. Witnesses said the man who was killed, Keith Lamont Scott, was unarmed.

“He exited the vehicle armed with a handgun,” Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney said in a news conference Tuesday. “The officers gave loud, clear verbal commands which were also heard by many of the witnesses.”

Police instructed Scott to drop the weapon, he said, but he re-entered his vehicle and exited again still holding the gun.

“He stepped out, posing a threat to the officers,” so one officer shot at him, Putney said. The officers immediately requested medical help, which performed CPR on the scene. Scott, 43, later succumbed to his injuries while in medical care.

Police identified the shooter as Officer Brentley Vinson, who has worked for the department since July 2014. Vinson is black.

The shooting ― the sixth Charlotte-Mecklenburg police killing of a civilian in the past year ― happened just before 4 p.m. at an apartment complex roughly a mile from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers were searching at the complex for someone else who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, police said in a statement.

The killing unleashed a wave of anger, with hundreds of people converging at the shooting scene, chanting anthems that decried police violence. More than a dozen officers and several members of the press were injured. Police blamed “agitators” who joined the protesters for destroying marked patrol cruisers.

Police said Civil Emergency Unit vehicles were sent to remove officers whose vehicles had been surrounded by protesters.

Overnight, the protesters moved onto I-85, blocked traffic and threw rocks at passing vehicles, WBTV reported.

The demonstrators also set a fire on the interstate after allegedly stealing cargo from a truck that was carrying auto parts. The unidentified driver told WSOC-TV that she feared for her life.

“I understand they want to make a statement, but they are hurting innocent people trying to make a living,” the driver said.

Once the police moved in and cleared the demonstrators from the highway with flash grenades, the protesters dispersed, Reuters reported. A group of protesters then broke into a Walmart store, WSOC reported.

Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts, who was reportedly “monitoring the situation closely,” took to Twitter to urge for calm.

“The community deserves answers and (a) full investigation will ensue,” she said on Twitter, adding in a subsequent post, “I want answers too.”

A woman who identified herself as Scott’s daughter captured the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live. She and other witnesses said Scott had a disability and did not have a gun.

“The police just shot my daddy four times for being black,” the woman said.

The Huffington Post couldn’t independently verify the video and was unable to reach the woman. Her Facebook page was later disabled, but a version of the video remained viewable on YouTube (warning: strong language).

Police didn’t say how many shots were fired.

This is the sixth time in the past year that Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers have been involved in a fatal shooting of a civilian, according to police data. The district attorney found police to be justified in the five previous killings, according to local news channel WSOC-9.

All of the department’s officers began wearing body cameras a year ago. Three of four fatal shootings that happened from September 2015 to May weren’t captured on cameras. It’s unclear if a June 3 shooting was filmed by the department’s body cameras.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s tactical and SWAT units do not wear body cameras, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Putney called the investigation “preliminary” and said both the criminal investigative bureau and internal affairs are involved. Vinson was put on paid leave while the probe is underway.

This article has been updated to include the names of the man who was killed and the shooter, and the protests. Details from a Wednesday press conference with the police chief have also been added.

Readers: To add to the insanity, the current polls between Clinton and Trump, is just unreal. Unfortunately it is very real and we must really ban together if we are to win. Only 48 days left to put an end to this political madness.

I listened to 2 hours of the daughters crying anger. It was do disheartening.

  2. MoveOn member Says:

Terence Crutcher, a father of four, was on his way home from class at Tulsa Community College when his car stalled in the middle of the road. Someone called the police. And instead of helping him, officers jumped out of their vehicles with guns drawn while helicopters circled in the sky filming the entire incident. Terence Crutcher needed help. But instead, he got a bullet.1

Terence Crutcher died because he was Black. There’s no other reason for someone to be killed by police when they are unarmed, walking slowly away with their hands up. He posed absolutely no threat, and yet the officers in the helicopter can be heard on video saying, “That looks like a bad dude, too. Probably on something.”2

To make matters worse, after Officer Betty Shelby killed him, Tulsa Police let Terence Crutcher bleed out on the street. He died in the hospital a few hours later.3

This kind of continued disregard for Black life is enraging. Officer Betty Shelby killed someone. She should not be on administrative leave, sitting at home collecting a paycheck. Terence Crutcher’s family and local activists in Tulsa are calling for Officer Shelby to be arrested and criminally charged.

  3. Abagebe Says:

You black bastards who so macholy kill each other should show some real manliness and kill a few of those “thugs with guns” you talk so much about.

They will never stop murdering you and yours until they feel the heat of retribution. In the words of your own vocabulary ” get some balls and kick some thug ass.”

  4. Shelia Says:

Me, I’m tired of hearing those that say we need to give the police more training in when to use force. The bastards have no problem understanding when to use or not use force when they are dealing with none blacks.

Witness their restraint when they have to deal with a terrorist who has fired upon them. He was taken alive. But an unarmed black man was murdered.

I say what is needed is for black men to man up and start taking these racist bastards to task. If you have to die in the process you will be added to the Black Saints wall with Saint Micah Xavier Johnson and Saint Gavin Eugene Long.

  5. Monique Says:

What irks me is all the nazi movies showing the atrocities the Nazis committed against the Jews. But we never see what white america did for 250 plus ears to us blacks.

  6. Zen Lill Says:

This is indeed the horrible eleventh hour I mentioned, not that I think any of these shootings were planned by anyone in particular, I’ll try to explain bc you all know I’m a bit of a theorist. Though I’ve been in deep speechlessness about it all, I’ve also been even deeper in the rabbit hole of backstory.

First I have to ask: What happened to our humanity? Makes me sad that we’re not evolving at all…

…such a web of info but we the people have allowed police departments to be equipped with military grade equipment (think Mike TM was the one who mentioned this some time ago) and now we’re at a point where I just see signs of impending martial law coming, if shootings continue and accompanying retaliation and then the ensuing rioting, this can occur…Boston did it in 2013 after shootings (different situation but it’s controlling the population maneuvering) …

I said I wished Obama could stay another year and if we keep the eleventh hour month of seemingly unconnected occurrences happening, we may get that. He only signed a doc that Clinton signed in 1974 and Eisenhower in 1958 did, if martial law is declared the president can stay in office.

I didn’t actually want it under those circumstances and I certainly hope what I’ve mentioned above isn’t the foregone conclusion but I’m just observing and things don’t look good, and you’ve got a small margin between H Clinton and Trump, (which I cannot even believe I just shake my head) and pray to the universe for the best outcome (and we all know I don’t pray either) hate to sound depressing but none of this lawlessness and by the law men themselves makes any sense.

Should I have just extended my condolences for the lost lives?

If so, just pretend you didn’t read that.

    Luv, Zen Lill

  7. Irene Says:

The part that gets me is “Scott was rolled over and stripped to his boxers, he said, but police did not perform life-saving measures.”

Whether he had a gun or not, the fact that the cops didn’t attempt any life saving measures meant they wanted him to die.

Could that have been because he would have denied that he had a gun? Or was it just because he was black. As Shelia#4 pointed out cops have no problem being civilized when the person they are accosting is not black.

I agree this is sad Zen Lill, but I don’t see it going to a national emergency. We are not like other countries. We come together when we need to.

  8. Naomi Says:

Black mothers have this conversation every day with their black male children. I wonder how long white america would put up with cops murdering their children at will.
    ————————————-
People from outside the complex were also drawn to the scene, including Calvin Bennett of Columbia, S.C.

“You have a child coming off the bus and goes to meet daddy, but doesn’t know what to do because daddy’s dead,” Bennett said. “Think about that image for a minute. America should be outraged.”

“We get killed in church. We get killed when we comply. We get killed when we hold our hands up. We get killed when we wait for our children. What more can we do?” said Bennett, his tone sure and his words direct.

Asked if he is an activist, Bennett’s tone softened. He is not. He keeps up with the shootings of black people and has gotten an education he wish he did not need.

“The black community has this conversation every day,” he said, quietly. “We have this same conversation over and over and over.”
    ===================
Yes, Zen Lill, I agree with you America should be outraged, and they would if it were a white child who’s daddy had been murdered. We see it every day, when something happens to a white child it is on non stop on every news channel.

  9. Gwen Says:

I am black. I intend to wait until I hear all the evidence on this story in Charlotte.

I am concerned why they had to shoot him four times when he never fired a shot in their direction, the NYC bomber shot at the cops and was shot only once.

I am concerned if they didn’t get him immediate medical attention, the cops did that for the NYC bomber. the Charlotte PD said they did, I am waiting to hear the evidence.

  10. Zen Lill Says:

Irene, I do hope you’re right. I don’t see much coming together going on though, I watch from afar though and I do know that no matter where our news source is there are 7 large corporations that release info, that’s our radio/TV/everything so when I read anything I know there’s back story we are not getting so i try to connect seemingly disconnected things, maybe I just think too much.

Naomi, protests could escalate, there will be a tipping point. And we haven’t reached it yet.

I’m going to sit here and meditate fr this world to shift tonight, bc no one should be in fear of cops, that’s not the job, they’re supposed to be there to protect and serve and that mission has gone totally awry.

    ~ ZL

  11. Juanita Says:

Naomi#8, Latina women have that same conversation with their male children too.

In Tulsa, multiple videos were released of the fatal encounter between a black man and white cops.

The black man was shown walking slowly, his hands held high, back to his SUV, which had apparently stalled in the middle of a road.

Several officers followed, and soon after reaching his vehicle, Terence Crutcher was on the ground bleeding, with no immediate medical assistance.

They basically let him bleed out. They would have treated an injured animal better. But this was a black man, “a bad dude.” Evidently in cop speak that means less that an animal.

  12. Helena Says:

I defy white america to logically explain why a man needing help with a stalled vehicle became a suspect. Why were police commands given to a motorist in need?

No matter what turned a black man needing help into a “a bad dude,” as one of the officers described him, it’s difficult to claim he deserved to be executed on the side of the road.

  13. Sonya Says:

Why is most of white america more upset about a man deciding not to stand during the singing of the national anthem than men and women being unnecessarily killed by police?

  14. Mildred Says:

Zen Lill, I wouldn’t be too worried about a national state of martial law. Major changes by white america don’t happen without a major outcry from their OTW public, and that can’t happen without a BLACK commitment to keeping injustice in the headlines, no matter how many WHITE people are made uncomfortable.

  15. Paula Says:

In response to those who say rioting isn’t necessary. I say
since whites hate a man like Kaepernick for peacefully protesting what options do they leave others wanting to end injustice.

As long as blacks think to go to white neighborhoods and burn those fuckers down. The only way they will get any justice is if they show white america that it is in their best interest to do so.

It was the riots in the 60′s that pushed white america to end their blatant discrimination and allow OTWs to enjoy some of the basic rights they take for granted.

I agree with Mildred#14, there will be no national martial law, but burn a few of these racists white neighborhoods down and it will speed up the justice required to stop these thugs with badges murdering blacks at will.

  16. Kevin Says:

Zen Lill, don’t worry about martial law, beating and hangings will keep a lot of people in line.

  17. Charles Says:

Kaepernick is just a spoiled brat. Him along with probably about 80% of these little protesters have probably never experienced injustice…including the white ones posting to this blog.

  18. Alicia Says:

If you cannot set aside your issues, if you cannot set aside your grievances, your complaints, your views on what is wrong and what could be better for three minutes to come together with your fellow citizens in unity for the national anthem, you are part of the problem and not part of the solution. There are 1437 other minutes in that day, and all of the minutes in every other day to work for betterment and redress. There is no honor in turning the playing the national anthem into a time for your personal statement, those three minutes are bigger than that.

We have become so divided that now some consider it acceptable to sow division in a moment about unity. Maybe if we can come together for these three minutes, regardless of race, gender or identity, sexual orientation, class, religion, or other divide as fellow citizens of the United States, maybe we can use that as a common ground to start working on the rest.

  19. Lois Says:

Please explain to me Alicia why it is OTWs have to “come together” when it is whites tell them what is important. that just means it is important to them.

I don’t hear that sentiment when states fly the confederate flag and declare it superior to our national flag.

Me, I’d be alright if terrorist visited only white neighborhoods. I would not witness shit.

You no longer get to decide what is right nationally. Especially considering that song isn’t about celebrating the murder of white men.

Get off your narcissism and read the lines in the song. Substitute white for the “black” words and tell me honestly you would want to sing that song.

  20. Reba Says:

Kaepernick is a multi-millionaire with white parents because his black parents were lo sers. Not saying black parents are lo sers, just his. He needs to grow up.

  21. Nancy Says:

There is no evidence as of right now that supports the idea that Terrence Crutcher was shot because the officers were rac.ist. Judging by how upset the officer who shot him sounded this looks more like incompetence. She should be prosecuted because that’s what happens in a just system.

  22. Alicia Says:

I have read all of the verses, they speak of those who fought against our nation, whether as mercenaries or slaves who sided with the British. It is not a racial statement, but rather a statement towards those who turned to the enemy. In any case, since it is not performed, it is not relevant.

  23. Liz Says:

Don’t fret Zen Lill, America is not outraged over the shooting of Terrence Crutcher. More American’s are upset by Adrian Peterson having surgery than the Crutcher shooting – truth hurts. The shooting of one f.o.o.l by the police, regardless of race, is not a national crisis!

    Besides niggers love to exaggerate.

  24. Edwin Says:

The Terrence Crutcher incident could have been easily avoided. It even looks like now he wasn’t even reaching into he driver seat because the driver’s side window was up.

  25. Mack Says:

Problem is that it was an unjustified shooting. I still don’t understand the reasoning behind why they didn’t take him down while he was walking back to the car. His hands were up and they didn’t take action till after he was at the car. There needs to be better training for officers on these matters.

  26. Holly Says:

Alicia#22, Well now how come we don’t apply that logic to the flyers of the confederate flag? “…speak of those who fought against our nation”

The confederates all fought against our nation. I suspect the “fought against our nation” only applies if they were black.

You are just another racist masquerading as a hypocrite or idiot.

  27. Clyde Says:

Alicia#18, Why because you think that? We are up set about a real issue and you want us to stand anyway. Just ig nore our feelings to make you feel better. They should not even play it at games. America does not have to what you view it as. Other people live here too.

  28. Liz Says:

Clyde#27, No but sitting/kneeling during the anthem is an obvious slap in the face! I have no issue with the guys who stand with their fists in the air, they are drawing attention without dishonoring the nation.

  29. Stuart Says:

What is it going to take for you people to get it. A guy laying on his back with his hands up?

  30. Larry Says:

“An unarmed black man walks on a Tulsa, Oklahoma, road with his hands in the air. Police officers follow closely behind him as he approaches his vehicle. He stands beside the car, then falls to the ground after one officer pulls the trigger.”

  31. Florence Says:

On the one hand, it is a little i d 1 o t i c to blame Kaepernick for things he had nothing to do with. Kap wasn’t the guy laying on his back in the middle of the street in Miami with his hands up. Kap also wasn’t the police officer who shot the guy laying on his back in the middle of the street in Miami with his hands up. So in that sense, people criticizing Kap are definitely criticizing the wrong person. Kap’s just reacting to it. Which is his right. No question.

On the other hand, you would like to see people do something more helpful to solve the problem. Taking a knee is your right. It’s peaceful protest. It doesn’t harm anyone. And it doesn’t cause any damage to property.

  32. Henry Says:

I’m white and the discussions we have when there are no minorities around tell me that for the most part white people are not that upset about blacks being murdered by cops.

They justify their racism by saying if they would only obey the cops, or cite some statistic that says blacks are just more violent that whites.

I often hear the start of the N word or some other derogatory term in reference to the black race during the heated parts of the discussions.

I have come to accept the fact that we as a race think we are better simply because of the color of our skins. They don’t know that my mother is half black. So they feel very comfortable using the N word and just being themselves.

That meaning racist while denying it in other mixed settings. I’m white but just not that proud of it.

  33. Michelle Moquin's "A day in the life of…" » Blog Archive » Flap Your Lips Friday Says:

[…] Irene: Yeah they wanted him to die. In my opinion, the cops most always want the black man they are shooting to die. They are not aiming to shoot a leg to incapacitate. The thugs want him dead so they can plant drug, guns, and make up stories. A dead man can’t talk and tell his side of the story. […]
