Bottled Water: Bad For The Environment, Bad For Your Bod

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 2nd June 2009

I don’t know about you but I drink a lot of water. And I used to be a big bottled water drinker until I found out how much plastic is on this planet and just what it is doing to our environment. (more on that at a later date) I have been filtering water for years and if I need to take some with me where ever I am going, I put it in a stainless steel thermos.

If you’re still drinking out of little plastic water bottles, first of all bad, bad, bad! Get over that nasty habit. It is doing the environment no good.  Not to mention your one and only temple of a bod. It has been reported that bottled water in your car is very dangerous. Check this out from John Hopkins.  My little two are inserted in (parenthesis).

Bottled water in your car is very dangerous!

On the Ellen show,  Sheryl Crow said this is what caused her breast cancer.  It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.

Sheryl Crow ‘s oncologist told her:

Women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.

Pass this on to all the women in your life. (And men too – they are not immune to breast cancer.)

This information is the kind we need to know that just might  save us!  Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic!

This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center:

  • No plastic containers in microwave.
  • No water bottles in freezer
  • No plastic wrap in microwave.

A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don’t freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. (Oops I learned something here. I used to freeze our water bottles before we went to Burning Man so that we always had cold water available. A big no-no)  Recently, Edward Fujimoto , Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.

He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers…

This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastic releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body…

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as  Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. (I love my Pyrex and I use it for everything – and some even come with lids. Although the lids are still plastic, and they say they are microwaveable, I don’t use them in the microwave – why risk it? On a side note: There is a reason that chemists use and have been using Pyrex for years).  You get the same results, only without the dioxin. Such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. (C’mon peeps, you shouldn’t be putting these types of foods into your beautiful bod anyways.)

Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper. ( So true.)

It’s just safer to use tempered glass,  Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons…

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran wrap, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. (This is scary. I never use saran wrap in the microwave. In fact I rarely use the stuff. I don’t like it. To cover food, I actually really like those elasticized plastic covers – you know the ones that look like cheap shower caps? Yep those are the ones – I use them over and over again. And, of course NOT in the microwave) Cover food with a paper towel instead. (But again, you don’t know what is in the paper)

**************

Lastly, like many of you I always ‘snope it’, just to see if it truly is an urban legend or something I need to be aware of. I bet many of you are snoping this as you read. You will, as I did, be told that what I just wrote is a mixture of truth and false information. But I will tell you what a friend of mine told me and I think he has a good point:

“It really depends on which scientist you believe. Google dangerous plastic containers and you will get a list of numbers that show some plastic containers that do leak dioxin. Remember when you were assured that cigarettes didn’t cause cancer?  And Scambusters pooh-poohed the suggestion that it was better to gas up at night that during the heat of the day. Now scientists have backed up the fact with data that fueling up in the heat of the day gives you less gas.”

“If I am to error, I would do it in my favor.  Have you noticed that the plastic bottles are not as substantial as they used to be?”

He’s got a good point, yes? I only have one bod and as much as I like to have a little fun and indulge in foods and drink that aren’t necessarily great for me – it is all in the balance of life…those risks are worth taking – there is a reward: Pleasure and enjoyment. But putting unnecessary dioxins in my body when there are easy ways to avoid it, is not. There is no fun factor attached. Don’t be lazy. Treat your body as if it were the only temple to house you – Actually it really is, unless you’ve got an extra ‘suit’ hanging around like our alien friends or earthling girlz :)

Hi Carol, Sandy, Viola: I’m delighted that my write yesterday was helpful to you and your families. My parents are not in their 80′s and are both good drivers but you can be sure that I will keep all of this in mind when it does come to that point where I might have to have a little chat.

Too Old To Drive?

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 1st June 2009

I know we’ve talked about parents aging and how to deal with the sensitive subjects such as ‘money’. But what about parents and their fears of losing their independence because they are questioning their ability to drive well? Another very sensitive subject.

I go through this with my mother every time she needs to take her driving test. She is a great driver but she does not test well, as taking tests makes her nervous. No matter what I say or help her to prepare, it is the way she is. Her worry is that she will not pass her driving test and her license will be taken away, hence her independence.

My mother is very independent and very social. Not being able to drive would be in her mind, the worst thing that could happen to her besides losing her good health. It has her worried so much that in the past we have roll played her test driving route, in hopes that she will relax enough to pass. She did pass her driving test as I knew she would, but at her age the test is every year, and every year she worries about it.

But what about the person who shouldn’t be driving in the first place? We’ve all read stories about an old person veering off the road and onto the sidewalk, running people down by mistake because of their lack of vision or quick reflexes.

Here’s an article that I read, and I found would be helpful, if perhaps you have a parent that might need to give up the car keys.

UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED… IS SOMEONE YOU LOVE TOO OLD TO DRIVE?

My 84-year-old neighbor still works daily in her garden but she recently decided not to drive anymore. It was a tough decision, she said, since she values her independence but no longer trusts her reflexes and vision. She told me she plans to live a long while and wants to be sure she doesn’t have to carry guilt for causing an accident that might hurt someone else.

Not everyone is so rational, I learned from Elizabeth Dugan, PhD, a researcher and associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston and author of The Driving Dillemma, who explained that giving up your car keys is emotionally loaded. “It’s important to realize that driving means more than getting from point A to point B. It is autonomy and independence.” If someone in your life needs to move to the passenger seat or you’re wondering whether it’s time for you to consider doing so yourself, it’s important to address the topic openly and honestly. You need to objectively evaluate abilities and deficiencies, and if evidence shows it’s time to stop driving, to come up with a plan for maintaining safety, independence and dignity, Dr. Dugan said.

GETTING AN ASSESSMENT

A logical first step is a consultation with a health care provider, such as the family physician… to assess the individual’s abilities. Specific areas to review include:

  • Cognitive skills. Tests of an older driver’s functioning can help determine driving fitness, which is even more critical if dementia is an issue. While some experts believe people with early dementia can drive safely, studies show that drivers with dementia are at greater risk for accidents — one recent one, from the University of Iowa, assessed the cognitive, visual, motor and on-the-road skills of 40 drivers with early Alzheimer’s disease and 115 drivers without any neurological diseases. People with AD had 27% more driving errors, leading researchers to conclude that performance on vision, cognition and motor skill tests is important in determining whether a patient with Alzheimer’s disease can safely drive.
  • Vision. The state of Florida now has mandatory vision screening for drivers 80 years of age and older. A study recently published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, suggests that this program brought about a 17% lower death from traffic crashes in this age group. Vision should be checked by an ophthalmologist or optometrist every one to two years if 65 or over, or two to four years for those 40 to 64, even if your state doesn’t mandate it.
  • Motor skills. Motor function, range of motion and motor strength should be evaluated.
  • Medications. The doctor will review regular medications to see if any might interfere with the ability to drive safely.

A formalized multidisciplinary assessment is the gold standard for determining driving fitness, according to Dr. Dugan. These are programs in which a geriatrician or geriatric nurse practitioner assesses physical function… a social worker assesses driving history and driving needs… a geriatric neurologist or neuropsychologist provides a cognitive workup… and an occupational therapist takes the person for a road test and/or helps find adaptive products. Clinics providing these assessments are usually associated with medical schools or rehab centers. To find a clinic in your area, log onto the Web site of The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists, aded.net, or driver-ed.org and click on membership directory. While such an assessment is usually expensive and not covered by Medicare, it may turn out to be money well spent.

SAFER DRIVING TIPS FOR SENIORS

Even if an assessment concludes that it’s safe to drive, it may be wise to maintain or improve driving fitness with these steps:

  • Stay physically fit. Yale University researchers found that physical conditioning helps maintain older adults’ driving performance, decreasing errors by more than a third.
  • Take a refresher course for older drivers. The AARP, for example, offers a driver safety education class for drivers 50 and over. Go to aarp.org/families/drver safetly/.
  • Use low-tech modifications (for instance, larger convex side- and rear-view mirrors) to compensate for reduced flexibility and other physical challenges.
  • Have your vision checked at least every two years. Also, keep the windshield of the car clean.

Don’t minimize concerns about safe driving — if you or a family member is worried about it, chances are there is good reason. A heart-to-heart conversation emphasizing your concerns about safety while also expressing respect for your loved one’s feelings is an act of love, for your family and others in the community.

Elizabeth Dugan, PhD, researcher and associate professor of gerontology and medicine at University of Massachusetts Boston. She is author of  The driving Dilemma (HarperCollins).

Readers: Interesting huh? All I can add is please be very gentle with your parents. Not being able to drive is a huge change in one’s life. I mean think about it if you had to give up the keys. Driving is almost like breathing. We take it for granted that we will always be able to do it easily and effortlessly.

The experiences that I have been having with my mother in this area have been very trying on her and I have had to be very gentle and patient in my approach knowing how difficult this is for her. Make sure that you are available to your parents when you see how the effects of aging affects their lives. Remember how understanding and patient they were with you when you were growing up.

Klaatu:  Thanks for the Kludos!

Here’s a little love peeps (smack!)…I’m signing off…

The Banks Have Been Bailed Out – But Where Is All Of The Money Going? (Part Two)

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 18th May 2009

Let me clarify when I said last week that I was having problems with Hope Now.  It wasn’t exactly Hope Now that was not returning my phone calls, but one of their affilitate counseling services called ‘Springboard’. I have to say that with a name like that, they weren’t exactly an impetus that I expected them to be.

However, a few days ago, I had a break through. I decided to call back Hope Now and complain about my ‘Springboard’ experience. When I called them and explained the past several weeks events, they were very apologetic and said that they were going to get someone else on the phone from Springboard to assist me.

Within a few minutes I was speaking to Kyle Perry, another Springboard counselor. I again explained to him that I was having communication problems with my first counselor from Springboard and that I had not received my report form their company that I needed in order to move to the second level. Kyle listened and apologized for the lack of communication from his associate.  He informed me that the report was sent out on the 6th of last month. I informed him that I never received it.

Without hesitation Kyle moved directly into motion on how he could assist me further by asking for my e-mail address so that he could send it to me while I was on the phone with him.  Within minutes he e-mailed me all of the information that I needed and waited on the line to make sure that I had received it.  So far Kyle had handled everything that I was hoping my counselor would do for me.

I then asked Kyle what exactly was going to happen when I spoke to another counselor in the next level. He kindly explained to me what their role would be and what Springboard’s role would continue to be.

From the short conversation that I had with Kyle, I felt that he was a person that really cared about my situation. He was so attentive, understanding, and compassionate that I decided to tell him of my experiences with my phone conversations with Wachovia. When I informed him that Wachovia offered their assistance to me because I was late in my mortgage payments and then denied me a loan modification because my mortgage was late; the rules had changed in the midst of the modification going through, he was shocked and said, ‘This isn’t right.’

I then told him that  Wachovia informed me that they were not allowed to interview me for the ‘Homeowner Affordability Stability Plan’ because I have a second lien’ He went on to say that Wachovia could only work with the first mortgage and it would be difficult with the second from another bank (or something to that affect). I interjected by saying that my first and second were with Wachovia! At this point he said, “Then having a second shouldn’t matter. Michelle, this isn’t right. Do you have some time for us to get on the phone with them? I want to make sure that you actually have spoken with the loss mitigation dept. I want us to call them together.”  “Of course”, I said. I was so delighted that Kyle was going to help me with my bank.

To make a long story short, Kyle was simply awesome. We got Jason on the phone from Wachovia who listened to all of the concerns that both Kyle and I had. We also went over all of my previous conversations that I had with Wachovia. Jason informed us of the new ‘Map Program’ (by Titanium Solutions) that was going to be available to those that held mortgages that were current. Thankfully, I fell in that category. Right now the programs that are available are only available to those that are close to  going through foreclosure. Thankfully, I don’t fall in that category.

Kyle asked questions and made statements that I felt were in my best interest and made sure that my file would not fall through the cracks and get lost. He wanted assurance that  my file was updated and that although he understood that those in foreclosure needed help now, he wanted to make sure that this program would be available to me so that I didn’t turn out to be in the same foreclosure position in the near future. When Kyle asked when this program would be available to me. Jason said that he did not know.  Kyle did not give up. He asked, ’30 days? 6 months?  – Can you give me a date?’  Jason informed him that this program should be available within the next two weeks and no more than 30 days, and that they would contact me. However, I could also call back, and check in with them.  Of course I noted in my Palm Pilot to alert me to make that phone call in two weeks.

We finished our phone conversation with Jason. I chatted for a few minutes more thanking Kyle for giving me such great support and service. I asked him if he could be my counselor, as I felt so comfortable with him and he now understood my position thoroughly. He was very thankful for the praise, and happy that he could help me. He ended by saying that said he learned everything from my counselor and assured me that my counselor would work in my best interest also.  However he did say for me to cc him in any future correspondence should I have any more problems and just to keep him posted on my progress. “You bet I will”, I said.

So, there you have it. I have not given up on Wachoiva or Springboard. Thanks to Kyle, I have the report that I need and today I am calling to schedule a meeting with the second level counselors. In another week, I will be making that phone call to Wachovia to inquire about the availability of the Map Program.

Oh…and before I forget, I did as Robert suggested and sent e-mails to my representative and congress, and to no surprise I have not received one response back. However, it has only been a little over a week. We’ll see if I get a response this week.

I have a little bit more hope than I did last week. I will continue to blog about my experiences contemporaneously. Please share your stories too. I know that many of you are having the same challenges that I am, but if you are having any successes I’d like to hear about that too  - Thanks.

Hi Al:  First of all , thank you for signing the petition.

Secondly, I usually bring to light women’s issues because I am passionate about women and women’s issues, and quite frankly, when women are in charge of this planet, and men are treated like second class, I will jump on the bandwagon and bring the men’s issues to light – okay?  Presently, it is usually men who are in charge of making these decisions over women’s health. In my opinion, no woman in her right mind would ever vote for a woman to leave the hospital 2 hours after a mastectomy, nor would she approve the type of care that you received during your reconstruction surgery. EVERYONE deserves the time they need to heal and to be taken care of by a professional.

As an example, Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician vote every year on the 50 most powerful physician executives in healthcare. This year the top person holding the position is a woman (Yeah! Congratulations Carolyn Clancy!), but there are only 6 other women who made this year’s 50 most powerful list! Men have most of the power here. And although the readers vote, you can see that the majority are voting for men. So….

…in light of Robert’s comment a few days ago and Tal’s comment that I posted yesterday, in regards to women being the majority of the voter population, I will say, “Shame on you women out there that haven’t been supporting women.  We have a majority voice and it needs to be heard.” I know I’m being redundant but sometimes things need to be said over and over again until they sink in. So here it is again; an excerpt from Tal’s comment:

It is my opinion that as long as women continue to ask a man for equality rather than simply taking her place along side of him by force of will, she will remain a second class being dependent upon the mood of the 1st class being for her level of comfort.

Before you get upset, examine the state of women in america today, honestly. She has the numerical numbers at the polls to elect a woman for every single office in the land. Yet, she consistently elects males over females. When those males she elects take office, she pleads with them to understand her plight as a woman. Duh, you think it would occur to her to elect a woman. If the supreme court were equally or 5 Women (as it should be according to the population numbers) we would not be hearing all this debate about what a woman should do with her body.

Women readers:  Do you get it? Now, let’s do something. Let’s take that position along side of men.

Back to you Al.

Thirdly, you are right, our medical system is a joke.  And like Connie I would rather have our government accountable than an insurance employee. The bottom line should always be safety first for the patient, not whether they’re saving a buck or two.

Connie: Thank you for sharing your story.  I am sorry to hear about your mother and I hope that she is doing well now.

Juanita:  I wouldn’t call that a ‘nice quiet poem’, but it did make me chuckle.

Clone This! And This…And This…

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 5th May 2009

After reading my write yesterday I got an e-mail from a regular reader. And suprisingly from someone that I don’t know, or at least I am not aware if I know this person. I didn’t recognize the name but that really doesn’t mean anything since there are so many anonymouses out there, and those using pseudo names.  But nontheless I was delighted. And the request was even more of a surprise.

The e-mailer, a man, sent this note to his girlfriend hoping that she would loan herself for his little project.  He told me that the note said, “If I buy one, can we make it together? I need you to contribute obviously LOL.” And attached to that e-mail note was this link:

Clone A Willy & Make Your Own Dildo- Low Price Guarantee
holisticwisdom.com/article_sex…

Haha! I thought that his note was so cute, and so did the recipient, his girlfriend.  She agreed to participate in his little project, however, her one caveat was that he get me to write about it.  Now how could I refuse some fun for this couple?  And really…doesn’t this seem like something I might post?

If you haven’t clicked on the link yet, you’re in for a treat. This company not only sells kits to clone your man, as mentioned above, but as my loyal reader suggested to his love, he would like her to contribute her little love nest too. Yes, you too can have a clone of your favorite ‘lil pussy!…just the outer labia lips only – Unlike your honey, who can use her dildo, the perfect replica of her pussy is not penetrable. Sorry guys; this is for your lusting eyes only.

The Details: The materials are 100% natural and non toxic. And, they come in a variety of colors: white & brown skin tones, chocolate, (warning: If you’re too hot it will melt in your mouth…or um…other places) & glow in the dark. (If you wake up and want some, and your man’s gone, you’ll have no trouble finding it). Yes, even the smallest anatomical details like veins and ridges in your flesh will be reproduced (!) And for all of those women out there who like a little motion, yes you can add a vibrating device. Is this a hoot or wha’at? And hey, if Oprah endorsed it, how can you go wrong?

I only have one question:  Can you clone my asshole too? :) (Did I just say that?)

Time to get off of mine and get outta here….

Gratefully your blog host,

Tap, Tap, Tap….

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 2nd May 2009

I am so happy it is the weekend. I need a bit of pampering.  You know…well at least you women know how much a mani/pedi can uplift one’s state of mind. Although I know some men out there that enjoy this kind of pampering too. I love a man who takes care of himself. Ah…it is the simple things in life that bring such a smile to my face.

And right this moment I am smiling. The rain has cleared the air, and the birds outside my window are chatting away. The sound these two are making I could listen to all day. The sound of nature, the world’s symphony.  So much more relaxing than the sound of technology: me tapping on my keyboard. Like the sound of my walk: fast, hard and purposeful, I’ve been told that I hit the keyboards with the same determination. Not exactly the soothing sounds of singing birds….just me, this little bird, tapping away conversing with you. :)

Speaking of tapping and technology….texting is the big thing these days. The ‘sneaky’ way of having a conversation with no one else privy to the info, except the texter and the one receiving the text. Remember Morse code? Another type of tapping technology, way before texting.  So if one had a contest to get a bit of information from one person to another which do you think would reach it’s destination faster? Texting or Morse code? Would todays’ technology beat out technology from 170 years ago?  Watch the video and you’ll discover yourself.

Hi Robert:  Great to hear from you again. That article you posted was priceless and the responder was brill in his comment. His response was just so logical…I loved it. Too bad this ‘spectacularly beautiful, articulate and classy’ girl didn’t have enough upstairs to figure that one out herself. I’m sure she get it now. Too funny.  Thanks for adding some humor to my day.

Hi Bob: I have tried most of those ‘secret foods’ and have a liking for many of them. The only one that I can’t quite aquire a taste for is the maca. I tried it the first time at one of my fave raw food restaurants “Cafe Gratitude”. They mixed it in a smoothy. It was pretty good and since I had heard that it was really good for me, I decided to buy a package of the maca. Unfortunately 6 months later I still have quite a bit left. I love smoothies but it changes the taste pretty dramatically and kind of ruins my love for fruit smoothies. Hence, the reason I have so much left.  Maybe I’ll give it another go. :)

Hi Martha:  You’re not doing anything wrong.  It is just the luck of the draw I guess. Thanks for the kudos and for the honest appreciation. So girlfriend….I don’t expect everyone to love all of the writes but I do appreciate you being a loyal reader. And I’m glad you get a good laugh every now and then. I do too which I love about my blog. It can get very heavy and a break of laughter is a good antidote for all that is going on these days.

Zen Lill: Mia is doing good – thanks for asking. I still see her almost every day. She is such a love. Happy the little kitty has your daily love too.

Peter & Anna: I am learning so much about Guam through your posts. And I am delighted that your peeps are tuning in too. It makes me laugh when I read that some of your readers wish you had  chosen a more toned down blog site – yep…there is a lot of ‘tone’ being thrown around here. I dig it.  Obviously they must too if they keep reading. And Peter, you are not being rude – I know you appreciate the forum. Hafa adai.

Hi Todd: Caught your comment on ‘Are You Prepared?’ Thanks for the interesting info on the ‘filter straw’.  Very cool. I want to check it out.

Okay peeps…I have more to say but I will reserve it for another day. I need to post so I can pamper :) Peace out…..

Gratefully your blog host,

michelle
