Opening Night At The DNC: Michelle Obama Nailed It

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 26th July 2016

Bookmark and Share

Good morning!

I know that probably every one of you saw Michelle Obama’s speech last night during the first evening of the DNC. In my opinion she is the quintessence of intelligence, grace, style, and beauty. I was so drawn in by her words…so moved by her honesty, and inspired by her optimism. This girl is REAL.

I loved that her speech was all about the children and the future of our country and how Hillary is the girl who will stick in there and persevere, no matter what. Michelle Obama: I hear you. I’m with her too.

Her speech, as many have already stated, will be anthologized, quoted, and replayed for years to come. Let me begin by replaying it for you right now. Unlike the featured article, I am posting the full speech. Enjoy it again.

From the Huff Po:

FLOTUS LIKE A BUTTERFLY STING LIKE A BEE

Michelle Obama: Who Do You Want For Your Children’s Role Model?

The Democratic Convention crowd went wild.

PHILADELPHIA ― First lady Michelle Obama on Monday asked Americans to decide who they want serving as a role model for their children ― Donald Trump orHillary Clinton.

This election, Obama said during her speech at the Democratic National Convention, “is about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives.”

The crowd waved purple signs that read simply, “Michelle.”

Obama made clear that this election will determine who will give hope to the next generation, or instill fear.

“Every word we utter, every action we take, we know they are watching,” Obama said. “We as parents are their most important role models.”

That responsibility, Obama said, carries into her role as first lady, and her husband’s job as president.

“We know that our words and actions matter not just to our girls, but to children across this country,” she said.

Taking a jab at Trump and others who have questioned the president’s citizenship and his faith, Obama repeated the advice she and the president have shared with their children.

“When someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level,” she said. “No, our motto is: ‘When they go low, we go high.’”

Obama recalled a simple but telling moment her husband shared with a little boy to tell those in Wells Fargo Center and watching across the U.S. that this election comes downs to more than party divisions stirring Democrats as the convention begins.

“Kids like the little black boy who looked up at my husband with eyes wide, and he wondered, ‘Is my hair like yours?’” Obama said. “Make no mistake about it, this November when we go to the polls that is what we are deciding. Not Democrat or Republican. Not left or right.”

And the only person she trusts with the future of her daughters and other American children is Hillary Clinton.

“I want a president who will teach our children that everyone in this country matters,” she said. “I want a president with a record of public service, someone whose life work shows our children that we don’t seek fame and fortune for ourselves.”

A president “can’t have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out,” she said. “You need to be steady and measured and well informed.”

In a nod to disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporters, Obama noted Clinton’s loss to her husband in 2008. “Hillary knows this is so much bigger than her own desires and disappointments.”

Instead, Obama said, Clinton decided to keep coming back to put “cracks in the highest and hardest glass ceiling” and take the country along. It’s that story of America, she said, that brought her to Philadelphia to deliver her speech.

It’s the story of generations who lived their lives in the U.S. feeling the “lash of bondage … the sting of segregation,” but who kept “striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today, I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.

“And I watch my daughters, two beautiful and intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”

Now, because of Clinton, Obama said her daughters will “take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.”

💪🏽♀💪🏽

President Obama: You must be so proud. Michelle Obama is a Wonderful Woman Of The World.

Readers: I’m 👉🏼 With Her.

Mike, TM: Thanks for the very informative post. You answered many questions that I had as I was perusing online. As usual the stakes are high. I’m looking forward to hearing how Putin arranged to get the UK out of the EU. I find it fascinating that hours after the Brexit vote, many British frantically googled:  ”What is the EU?” and “What will Brexit mean for the UK?” I couldn’t understand why people voted to leave the EU when they weren’t quite sure what their vote to leave would mean. Or was it just Big L, littla a…when it came to getting to the polls to vote or ? Perhaps your revealing of Putin’s antics will expose the truth.

#WhitePrivilegeMeans

Good morning.

In light of yesterday’s comments on the shooting of another black man.

From the Huff Po:

13 Tweets Explain The Deadly Impact White Privilege Has On Black People

“#WhitePrivilegeMeans always getting the benefit of the doubt.”

Since last week, we’ve learned the names of  several black men who were killed by cops across the country including Alton SterlingPhilando CastileAlva Braziel and Delrawn Small. The details and implications have been tough to process. One thing that can’t be ignored, however, is that if these men were white, they would very likely still be alive today.

On Friday, Twitter user Matt Edelstein revived the hashtag #WhitePrivilegeMeans(first tweeted in 2014) to educate and call out the ugly realities that people of color deal with every day that white people don’t have to.

“I decided to resurrect the tag while the topic was being made hot by the Alton, Philando and Dallas horrors,” Edelstein told Mic. “I felt it was a splendid teaching moment and that tag simply had to be resurrected right now, while the topic was very germane. Especially since the Dallas shooting was giving the #bluelivesmatter crackpot police apologists a chance to seize the narrative.”

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 9.01.18 PM

Other tweeters, both white and people of color, followed suit uncovering the struggles people of color face that white people are immune, and sometimes blind, to. Their tweets are chillingly accurate.

Readers: “White privilege means getting away with murdering black men.” White privilege means being able to run down the street without a cop stopping you thinking you did something bad.” “White privilege means not needing a reason to shoot a black man.”  #WhitePrivilegeMeans.

Don’t Mess With This Bay Area Girl 💪🏽

Good Morning!

From my neck of the woods. I love this story of strength, on the ball (literally!) and just down right kick ass, courage. A Wonderful Woman of The World in my book.

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

Nation’s oldest park ranger returns to work after violent attack

920x920

Betty Reid Soskin, 94, greets a cousin, Kirk Allen, at the Rosie the Riveter visitor center where she tells visitors about growing up in Richmond.

With her bruises healed and her spirits bolstered by scores of well-wishers, the nation’s oldest park ranger returned to work Tuesday eager to get back to her normal routine after being beaten in her East Bay home two weeks ago by a robber who stole a prize coin given to her by President Obama.

Betty Reid Soskin, 94, was calm and composed as she returned to the Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park on Richmond’s waterfront, greeting a crowd of fellow park rangers and volunteers with smiles and hugs as they welcomed her back.

“I don’t think there was any way to prepare myself for this morning,” Soskin told the crowd. “It’s good to see all of you, and to feel the support the community has given me.”

She bristled at being referred to as a victim.

1024x1024

Soskin hugs friends and co-workers as she returns to work after the June 27 attack in her home during which she was beaten and robbed.

The White House is sending a replacement coin to 94-year-old Betty Soskin, who says she hopes she can recover the original from violent home intruder The oldest park ranger in the US suffered a violent home invasion in which the suspect stole a commemorative coin Barack Obama gave to the 94-year-old woman, according to California police.

“I was almost obsessive about not wanting to look like a victim because I didn’t feel like a victim,” Soskin said.

1024x1024

Betty Reid Soskin returns to her job as park ranger at the Rosie the Riveter visitor center in Richmond after the attack June 27.

She recalled going to bed around 11 p.m. on the night of June 26 only to be awakened two hours later by a hooded burglar standing in her bedroom with a flashlight.

She crept out of bed and grabbed her cell phone, but before she could call for help the prowler threw his arms around her and wrestled her phone away. Soskin screamed as the robber dragged her into the hallway and punched her repeatedly in the face. She was able to escape by grabbing his genitals and then running into the bathroom, where she barricaded herself with her feet against the doorway and her back against a cabinet.

She plugged in her iron and had it ready to use as a weapon if he entered the bathroom. She stayed put for about 45 minutes until she was sure he had gone.

“If he had opened the door, I was going to brand him for the police,” Soskin said.

1024x1024

Following the attack, she went to a neighbor’s home to call the police. They have yet to identify the attacker, or recover the commemorative presidential coin Obama gave her.

She said she is nervous about learning the identity of her attacker.

“I almost need him to remain in the shadows,” she said. “I don’t think I want him to become real.”

Public outcry has been swift and widespread since the robbery, with community members and people across the nation offering support to Soskin during her recovery.

The White House has promised to replace the stolen coin, according to Tom Leatherman, the park’s superintendent. More than $50,000 has been raised to help her replace the stolen items, which included her computer and cell phone.

Just as widespread has been admiration for Soskin’s strength in the face of such a brutal assault. It was a feat to keep her away from the park for even two weeks, Leatherman said. She wanted to come back the moment her bruises had faded.

“I still struggle, but I don’t feel as vulnerable as I did,” Soskin said. “I can stay alone.”

1024x1024-1

Betty Reid Soskin, 94, takes part in TV interview on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Rosie the Riveter visitor center in Richmond, California. This is the first time Soskin will be back in the visitor center to conduct her regular ranger program since she was a victim of a home invasion attack on the morning of June 27, 2016

Soskin became a park ranger at the age of 85, a career move inspired in part by her desire to share her own experience of being a young African American woman in Richmond during World War II. She hosts a regular talk, “Of Lost Conversations,” at the park’s visitor center in which she discusses her time as a 20-year-old clerk working in a segregated union hall in Richmond. The city was a shipbuilding center, but she never saw a ship under construction or a ship being launched.

“She doesn’t identify with Rosie the Riveter — a white woman,” said Sue Fritzke, the park’s deputy superintendent. “What she tries to do is flesh out the history, not just of women in World War II, but of African Americans and people with disabilities.”

Since the attack, family and community members, including Soskin’s two sons, have come out in full force to ensure she feels safe in the community. Soskin has had a burglar alarm system installed in her home, where she lives alone.

Victim Witness Assistance Program offered to relocate her after the robbery, but she refused. She said Tuesday that she feels safest in her apartment, where she was known by neighbors and local police.

Soskin is still sleeping with her light on to maintain peace of mind, but on Tuesday she navigated the park center and prepared to interact with visitors without a trace of fear.

“Betty is a woman of resilience,” said her former co-worker Kimiko De Pedro. “She is authentic in how she speaks to the public and that is what makes people connect to her.”

💪🏽❤️💪🏽

Hello!!…you go girl – grab them balls and squueeeze for dear life!!

Readers: Talk about thinking on you toes. She’s an inspiration. I HOPE I’m as sharp as Soskin when I’m her age.

Thanks to all for the beautiful 9 year wishes – It’s so good to be back here with all of you. So ❤️ much ❤️ love…

Newt Gingrich On The ‘Everyday Danger’ Of Being Black In America

Posted by Michelle Moquin on 12th July 2016

Bookmark and Share

Hey there…Good morning.

It’s a bit slow out there. What’s going on? I haven’t heard too many comments about Ailes’ behavior in the media, nor here. Wha’at?! We can call out Cosby on his atrocities but what about Ailes?

Here’s something excellent to chew on from the Huff Po.

Newt Gingrich On The ‘Everyday Danger’ Of Being Black In America

The former House Speaker has become a de facto adviser to presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), a former House Speaker whom presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is reportedly vetting for vice president, said Friday that black people in the U.S. “are substantially more likely to be in a situation where the police don’t respect you, and where you could easily get killed.”

“Sometimes, for white people, it’s difficult to appreciate how real that is,” Gingrich said during a Facebook Live conversation with former Obama administration official Van Jones. “It’s an everyday danger.”

“If you’re an African-American, then you’re raising your teenage boys to be very careful in obeying the police,” Gingrich said to Jones, who is black and the father of teenagers. “Literally, their lives are at risk [if they interact with police], and they can see that on television.”

The former House Speaker’s comments came as the nation collectively mourned the five Dallas police officers who were killed on Thursday following a peaceful demonstration against police brutality. The protest was prompted in part by police fatally shooting two black men earlier this week ― Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

“If you’re a normal Caucasian,” Gingrich continued, “you don’t see that, because it’s not part of your experience. What we need is to have a conversation about mutual experiences.”

Gingrich also admitted that he has not always understood the disparity between how white Americans and black Americans are treated.

“It took me a long time, and a lot of people talking to me, to understand that if you are a normal white American, the truth is that you don’t understand being black in America,” Gingrich said. “You instinctively underestimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk” that black Americans face.

57801b101a00002600dd058c

Gingrich, who appeared on stage with Trump in Cleveland this week, has emerged as a top contender for the Republican vice presidential nomination. He has also become a de facto adviser to Trump, who is mounting his first-ever national political campaign.

Gingrich initially chided Trump for his “inappropriate” remarks on Indiana-born federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel, but later defended the candidate, saying that he did not think the comments were racist. Trump claimed the judge’s Mexican heritage would keep him from being able to fairly preside over a fraud suit filed against the now-defunct Trump University program.

Gingrich said Trump had learned his lesson about the racist attacks, and had “moved toward a more controlled, more civil approach.”

Gingrich’s talking points from Friday could provide some much-needed insight for Trump, who has a decades-long record of allegedly racist business practices and public statements.

Both Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton canceled campaign events they had planned for Friday. The Trump campaign has not announced when, or if, Trump and Gingrich plan to appear together again.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

CLARIFICATION: Language has been added to clarify Gingrich’s response to Trump’s comments on Curiel.

Readers: I don’t agree with everything this video is saying, (not in the least), but I do know one person I can reach across to. What about you? Lots to say here. Start talkin’.

Helena 1: I hear ya. It isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last time. Thanks for your concern. I HOPE you’re well.

Alycedale: Me too. And no I agree that you don’t need to explain why women wait but I’m glad you did for the ignorant men who can’t seem to figure it out on their own.

I’ll will add too, to the dimwits out there who still don’t get why she waited so long. Unless you have been harassed or raped, please don’t judge the time frame a woman may need to speak out.

A woman speaks out against her perpetrator when she is good and ready and only she knows when that is. Only she knows when she feels safe or when she feels she can handle the attention she is going to receive from speaking out. Hell, some women have blocked it out from them memory until something triggers it and the memory surfaces, and then she speaks out.

And just for the record, Larry: I may not like the way some of the women on FOX throw women under the bus or debase them, but I don’t condone the sexual harassment or worse, rape of women and certainly not because of their bad behavior. Only a man would put those two in the same paragraph as if they have something in common. That’s the problem with most men, they don’t see the difference. They think being sexually harassed to give up a little pussy is in the same category as women dissing women. It isn’t. That just shows you how little regard and respect men have for women.

Any other thoughts? Blog me.

The Shooting Death of Philando Castile

Good morning!

Running late this morning.

In less than 6 months 532 people have been killed by cops. (update: Depending upon what you read it is as high as 580) In 2015 black men were killed at a rate of 5-1 to white men of the same age despite black men making up only 2% of the total US population.

Yet the focus is on the 5 cops that were killed, as Liu has already stated.

Liu: I know you already posted this twice because it is so important. I’m posting it again because I feel it is too important to not be headlined.

*****

Readers: This cop recklessly shot his gun into the car with a small black child in the back. The child could’ve easily gotten hurt or killed but the cop didn’t give a fuck. Would he have done that with a white kid sitting in the back? I highly doubt it.

As hard as it is to see this video, I encourage you to watch it and watch it all. What we feel is nothing compared to what the trauma the Ms. Reynolds and her young daughter will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Who knows the ramifications it will have on this 4 year old child having to deal with such a tragedy at such a young age. My heart goes out to both of them and their families.

Thanks for your patience in my late post. I’ll address some comments tomorrow.

The forum is now open. Blog me.
